Marantz 2235 Right Speaker Hiss

Howdy all.

I have a Marantz 2235 and getting speaker hiss from the right channel. It happens:

  • Regardless of where I have balance set
  • On every input (phono, aux, tape, etc.)
I have thoroughly DeOxited the crap out of this thing, and I cleaned the relay. (Business card sprayed with DeOxit across the connections).

Also checked the cables- swapped the lines and everything- issue is in the receiver.

Think I need to replace the relay? Any other troubleshooting ideas?

Separate the pre-out from the main - in . Do you still hear the right channel noise ?
 
I think that unit is internally jumpered. You will need to plug an RCA cable into the Main In jacks to break the connection between Pre and Main. It might even turn out that the hiss originates in a bad connection at the internal jumper.

Thanks all. I plugged in a spare RCA cable to the Main-In (nothing connected at the other end of the cable) and the hiss stopped- no sound at all from either speaker.

I am using the pre-out to connect to a subwoofer, and I heard the sub only when I turned on some music (FM radio).

The jumper is internal by the way on the 2235- you are correct.

Ideas?
 
Deoxit the internal jumpers just to rule them out. But it sounds like the preamp is suspect. Noisy transistors can cause hiss. A scope would really help trace the hiss.

Great- just sold my scope as I never used the darn thing. Oh well. When I get back from work I'll DeOxit the jumpers. Otherwise may need to replace some preamp transistors?

I also made a little audio probe (like this https://www.coda-effects.com/2015/07/troubleshooting-guide-for-guitar.html) for troubleshooting guitar pedals- wonder if that or something like that might be able to trace issues here as well?

Looks like on your PE01 board, one channel is HE01/03/05/07 and the other channel is HE02/04/06/08. It’s laid out differently from the board in the link, but the transistors serve the same purpose and are similar, with the same replacements - KSC1845FTA for 2SC1328 and KSA992FBU.for 2SA763.
 
Like Steven said, finding where the signal gets noisy is scope territory. The probe you made is supposed to trace the presence of AC current?

It's solely for tracing the audio signal path. You basically play a test tone or something and then listen as you probe your way down the audio path of the schematic. Thinking a multimeter may be better suited to the task of detecting AC, right?

Think you need to see where the sine wave/tone gets fuzzy, which you'd need scope for.
 
Here's some photos I took of the guts of the receiver last time I had it opened up. (I replaced a couple caps that looked suspect but ultimately were fine.) Not sure if the visual will tell us anything, plus I don't have any shots of the whole unit, but figured it couldn't hurt to include these...

Thanks! Replacements are backordered at Mouser, Digi-Key, and everywhere else I found in the last 3 minutes on Google. I hate going the eBay route as too many knockoffs. Might be able to find some at a local shop near me that sometimes has this kind of stuff though.
