Marantz 2245 C701/C702

This is the first time I see 2.2uF tantalum at the C701/C702 phono board. I've seen threads about upgrading them from 0.47uF to 1uF I wonder if I go from 2.2uF to 1.uF that would be considered a downgrade?

Hi ocdecio,

A lot of phono preamps used the tantalum caps.
My 1060 for instance.
Note that your preamp has 4 tantalums. The blue ones and the red ones next to each other. C701 to 704

You could replace them with a nice electrolytic.
Tantalums are polarized. IMO, i would'nt go lower than the original ones.

Hello @Roger_88_K I ended up finding a very nice pair of 2.2uF Panasonic ECWs and replaced the 22uF with Silmics. I left the brown beauties alone. Sounding great.

Those ECW's are an excellent choice.

If, for any reason, you want to replace the other ones. The Kemet T35x series Ultradip II are a very nice replacement for the brown tantalums..
Used these for a Sony Esprit preamp a few years ago.

For that rating I'd use a film cap if I could get it in there. Tantalums were probably used for the size, not the quality of the capacitor. Very tight board.

I wouldn't use a tantalum of any kind in the audio path! My preferred series to replace them are low leakage ones, like Nichicon KL's. But agree with Roger, don't go down in value, resistors may have been changed to go with the usage of 2.2uF. I've never made a study of that. The films will work fine too so leave 'em in there!
