Marantz 2270 Engraved Survey

Thank you for your input. One of the reasons i ask for photos is because many people (sellers and buyers) do not know the difference between the two finishes. Furthermore, the finish itself on the faceplates are different which means the appearance is different adding to the confusion. I don't want to provide bad information so I try to confirm every number with the faceplate for myself. Good luck with your unit.

I have both and they are beautiful.

dgunnr - This should interest you! There’s what looks to be a silver / engraved Marantz 2270 on eBay (Serial # 5380). What do you make of that?

I have to admit this has me stumped. I have records of around 7 units between 5012-5300 that are not engraved. This supported the notion the engraved units did end around 5,000 +/-. This particular unit means the engraved line was not finished.

False Alarm… The seller just got back to me saying that “it was missing the serial plate so they put a different one on. This is one of the first 5000 units.”

Now if only it weren’t priced at $3,400…

Wow, this i a prime example of hard it is to be accurate with this survey. Another problem is some owners (mostly resellers) do not know the difference between the champagne engraved color and regular silver. Some have even listed non engraved units as engraved and vise versa. I always try and get a good clean photo of the faceplate to verify myself. This survey has not been as easy as it appears.

This 2270 is way overpriced but in nice condition. Thank you for obtaining information, saves going down the wrong rabbit hole!

I spotted a silver engraved 2270 at a local dealer. I'll see if they will pull it off the shelf and let me photograph the front and back.

I just picked up a 2270 Champagne Engraved. Serial #1073 so guess it is the 73rd unit made. Its hardly noticeable in color compared to my standard 2245 silk screened (i think the camera exaggerates the color difference more than the human eye). In fact, Id say the smooth finish on the champagne is a more noticeable difference. Is there something special or different with these early metal wood cases. Venting and grain look different.

I should be very noticeable in face plate appearance. Yes 78 unit made. That really will not affect value much compared any other engraved unless you had first or last one. Remember there all rare, condition more important since you cannot buy a replica. The silver engraved are much rarer, that is one the purposes of this survey. Determine how many made and break down what % champagne and what % silver.

do you see any difference between the 2 models from the inside?

Any Canadian stickers on the high serial one? 6 is known to be the designation for Canada, but that makes the 0273 the odd portion.
If the chassis is also gold, and the serial inside reads the same, then its Champagne. There would be an alternative reason why like mistamp, ir some previously unknown factors.
Factory defects of various types were pretty common early on across all Champagne not just the 2270.

Ah : I did not even know that engraved faceplate Marantz existed in the 70s... I own three (2270, 2250B, 2015), but all are the usual brushed aluminium with silk-screened lettering.

2024 updated Marantz 2270 Champagne and Silver engraved survey. Have not done this in awhile. This survey covers serial #1,000-5,000 only. I have also confirmed it did most likely stop at the 5,000 number since I have documented many units just after 5,000 to 6,000+ that are heavily brushed but not engraved. The "Canadian engraved models in the 60,000 range I will let someone else research those models because i have many questions including the dual serial number on the back and what that means. Wish i could find a ex-Marantz executive to discuss that and clear it up.

I have 152 units in my survey that are confirmed engraved units. This means i have personally confirmed they are engraved units by carefully examining photo evidence of each unit. I do not take anyones word since some people may think they have an engraved unit and don't or vice versa. Out of the 152 confirmed units, 142 are Champagne and 10 are Silver. The sample size therefore is 152 out of 4,000 units or 3.8%. Percentage wise this means confirmed Champagne units comprise of 93.42% and Silver is only 6.58% of the 4,000 units. Obviously, having a sample size of 3.8% means I have gaps with no information. Within these gaps I am assuming they are all Silver. Even making this assumption there could only be 16.57% Silver units or 663 total (4,000 x 16.57%= 663). Every time I update this survey it usually means that gap goes down closer to the 6.58% number.

So bottom line is, based on actual units and factoring in gaps, the Champagne engraved units make up 83.42% (3,337) to 93.42% (3,737) of the total 4,000 engraved units. Silver engraved units make up 263 (6.58% x 4,000) to 663 (4,000 x 16.57%= 663). Either unit is beautiful in its own right. The Silver engraved are very rare and were probably only made to fill in gaps due to production issues. The Silver engraved units were scattered in the 2,000 to 4,000+ range in very small batches. Happy new year to every!

To throw a wrench in the face plate study, I just acquired a 2270 serial # 4981. It has a Champagne non-engraved face plate. It could have been a part of transition batch of 50-100 units.
