Marantz 2270 Engraved Survey

Cou
To throw a wrench in the face plate study, I just acquired a 2270 serial # 4981. It has a Champagne non-engraved face plate. It could have been a part of transition batch of 50-100 units.
Could You send really clear photos of the front face plate, serial number and lettering so I can examine it. Might confirm a possible earlier ending than # 5,000. Thank you!

Just to make sure the lettering is smooth with no engraving present on any of the lettering at all? If so you would be correct this would be transition units that are Champagne in color but not engraved.

So this is without a doubt a champagne faceplate?
Waiting for confirmation that all lettering and numbers are smooth not engraved but to my eye it looks smooth. As qs1010 indicated this appears to be a transition unit and one I was not aware of. This is probably a very rare unit just like the Silver engraved face plates. This survey has been interesting for sure.

Yes a champagne colored faceplate to answer your question.

Yes, it is smooth, or should I say painted or decal'd on. I don't know what they used, but it's slightly protruding. I came across this thread trying to research if there were pre 5000 serial numbered non engraved champagne's. The very late number made me think possibly it was a transition batch. Anyways, this is a very interesting survey. Thanks.

Marantz 2270, S/N 3983, faceplate is champagne engraved.

Photos are from before restoration and cleaning was begun. The third picture has a standard 2230 silver face on the right for comparison.

Just found out a few days ago that I have an engraved 2270. Not being a Marantz expert (yet) I was unaware of these. The serial number is #3871 and I believe it is champagne but I'm not sure. I compared it to a 2226b I have sitting around and I'm still not sure. I did clean it up quickly to see if there was any smoke gunk on it but there wasn't. There is a slight difference between the two but it is subtle.

I would take a picture in a shaded area. The bright sun makes it difficult to tell but based on my survey numbers this is very likely a champagne engraved unit. The champagne color has more golden hue verse the top 2226B. If you can take the picture of the 2270 in the shade or indoors and repost. Thanks!!!

Here are a couple of pictures taken in my normal picture taking shaded area. I'm convinced this is champagne but it is subtle. Without the comparison I'm not sure I would notice the difference. At least it fits neatly into data that has been collected so far.

Having owned that period of Marantz, I think they’re silver faced. The champagne is subtle but clearly a different shade.

I have an engraved 2270 and an engraved 2230. Depending on the light, I've sometimes considered my champagne and at other times I've wondered if they're a lighter variation or even, perhaps, silver. I'm not convinced there is a clear delineation among these engraved units. It could be they were inconsistent in color, the way paint can have different die lots, or it could be that people see things differently and take photos in different lighting conditions. Even seeing the photo of four units next to each other, I'm not convinced there's a clear distinction as there's no way to compare lighting. I'd like to see a purported engraved silver unit in the same photo as a purported champagne unit, with the light hitting both square on from the same angle and the camera carefully positioned to make sure they receive equal light. Better still, I'd like to see both in real life sitting next to each other.

@DRozell - maybe having it framed by the wood case in your photo is making it more difficult to discern? The difference can be fairly subtle. Unless you happen to have a loose silver faceplate in hand you can hold up, the best way I know of is to take it out of the wood case and sit it directly side by side with a silver face unit. A couple of examples:

Champagne 2270 (engraved) over a Silver 2270 (not engraved):

Champagne 2270 (engraved) and Champagne 2245 (engraved) next to a silver 2275 (never engraved):

Enjoy! -Steve

The difference is very clear here.

I edited my post to make clear which were engraved/non-engraved in my photos.
Can tell very easily now it is champagne engraved. Congrats on your beautiful 2270! FYI, very first page I posted both Champagne and Silver engraved face plates.
