Marantz 2325 Black Case

Does anyone know the story behind Marantz using the black metal case on some of the 2325 units? I noticed that they used them on 2500 and 2600 units as well.

I think it was due to where the unit was originally purchased. I could be wrong though. There is an older thread somewhere here that had more info.

If they originally came with the wooden cabinet, they had a black case. if they were purchased originally without the wooden cabinet, you got the simulated wood grain metal case. I had one of each, and I believe this doctrine is gospel. Anything better guys?

Don't take it as gospel but I thought with the 22XX series the majority of the Black faced models were from Okinawa. Not sure if that helps or that was true for the 23's

I think that is right, although here in Asia there were MANY sold with black-painted metal cases that did not have the wooden outer cases. About 80 percent of cases here are black, I'd say.

On the subject of colors and cases, here is a tip I've mentioned before but never got much response to:

For the Marantz receivers with the dark dial faces (the earliern/on-B models), try making a BLACK wooden case. It looks VERY sharp, indeed, as the black picks up the dark dial face nicely. Gives the thing a still-vintage but more contemporary and timeless look than the rather dated (but nice) woodgrain case. I have one black case that came with a 2250B (with black dial face, despite being a "B" model) and now cradles a 2275. Someone had died it black, which I wouldn't have done to the original woodgrain, but after seeing it I like it so much that I'm considering commissioning some copies in piano black to put on other black-dial receivers.

Hey - we're talking about the metal-case here - right?

The black metal-cases were put on the units from the time where Marantz moved their headquarters to Chatsworth - Cal (late '76 AFAIR) (even if the units were made in Japan)
The woodgrain vinyl-covered cases were from the earlier Sun Valley-period - (even if the units were made in Japan.)

Freddy

My 2226 is an all Black model and looks stunning after I re lamped it. I looked into making a wood case and covering it in Ebony Wood... There's quite a few veneer dealers out there and if you do a search here on AK, I'm sure you'll find everything you need if you decide to make your own wood case.

Interesting... mine has a Chatsworth plate on the back and a woodgrain vinyl covered case (enclosed in a WC-43 cabinet) March '76 build. :scratch2:

My current receiver is from the Sun Valley period and has the wood grained vinyl cover. My other receiver that I no longer have, had a wood cabinet and black enamel case. It too was from the Sun Valley period. I pulled the wood from it and threw it out, preferring the black cabinet underneath. The wood cabinet was in sweet condition and I borrowed my dads router to round the edges for another project and of course ruined it. BAH! I should mention that this was 25 years ago and I have since gotten a little bit brighter!

I have a 2238 with a black vinyl covered case, much like the later 2285B. The 2500/2600 cases are painted or powder coated with a semi-gloss finish. My 2238 is an early 1977 model with the separate metal trim piece for the buttons and the black dial. I tried to move the case over to a 2270 but the 2238 black case is slightly bigger and does not fit.

All of the silver faced "B" (2216B, 2238B, 2285B, etc.) models I've seen had the black metal case. And the 2218. All these were post '77 if I remember right. So that would confirm fredmarantz's theory of late '76 when Marantz moved HQ. But the 2325 was '72-'74, so I don't know much about it. I've seen it with the woodgrain metal and black metal cases.

My recently acquired Chatsworth era 2325 has the wood grain metal cabinet that I would love to replace with a black metal one like most of my other Marantz equipment has. I keep watching on the Bay for one that somebody doesn't need anymore.

The last of the 2325's and 2275's made had the black cabinet. It had nothing to do with if you got the wood case or not.

You could always scuff it with some 200 grit and paint it with Krylon Fusion.:D

Exactly. And they were made into the middle of 1977- those are the ones with black cases. I have a 2325 and a 2275 both date stamped 7/1977 and they are both black cased.

Why just about all sources say that 2325 production ended in '76 is beyond me.:sigh:

If you're looking to paint it you can remove the vinyl with paint remover. However, once you see the bare metal you may wish to leave it like that as it looks very sleek!
