Marantz 2330 Rebuild

I did. I'm chasing down some noise that I think is transistors on the tone board but I'm not sure yet. That noise comes up when it's booted but then goes away after about 10 seconds. Sounds like transistor noise before they get warm. No hiss. I'll have to take a video with a recording of the sound. Other than that it plays really strong and the issues I was having between left and right channel volumes is completely gone.
 
New lights. I prefer warm white LED with double vellum to diffuse. Conducting penultimate testing on the main system downstairs.

The left channel is still prone to cut out a bit after a while, and completely manipulating the bass potentiometer restores it. I've done dexoit and fader lube multiple times. If it doesn't settle out after a while, I may be looking for that varister.

The sound is pretty incredible. I hooked it up to RF7s for a bit on the home theatre, and I've never heard them sound that good and powerful.
I just finished a listening session on the KLF30s downstairs and even more impressive.

One issue, I could use help with.
On both the left and right heatsinks, if I touch my finger across the top two output transistors (outside), I can feel a slight electrical tingle.
I don't think I've noticed this before. If only a single output transistor is touched, no tingle. Is this normal? If not, what should I look for to correct?

You should be OK, just keep your fingers out of there.
There is quite a high DC potential on the output transistor cases. The top cover prevents casual contact.
What is the part number printed on the back of your bass control? The service documents list it as R469 RM0104005. There are probably other models that use the same part.

  • Hum was actually cheap crutchfield interconnects; replaced with my blue jeans cables and went away
  • Bass pot after several more manipulates/dexoit finally settled in; it was responsible for what I thought was start-up transistor noice and the remaining left channel attenuation
  • Sounds and looks wonderful
  • I keep track of my restorations on google sheet documents; here is the one for this 2330 so that others can see what I replaced and didn't replace when they are looking to do a rebuild
  • I take copious pics before and after and I find it very helpful to look at others to see what mine might "should" look like in case I get a unit fubarred by someone else :) So I've shared those HERE.
  • Build quality of the 2330 is fantastic. Much better than most Sansui's I've rebuilt.
Listening impressions. Primarily with Blusound node2i and Tidal hd tracks. Speakers are either Chorus II (Crites xovers and titanium diaphragms) or KLF30's (stock) or Klipsch RF7s (gen 1 stock).
  • My reference is a restored Sansui AU555A - extreme clarity and musicality from my 34hz (speaker limits) - 18k(my hearing limits :p - getting old)
  • Sansui edges out the 2330 on clarity and on low volume listening, but would be considered a little bright once I listened to the Marantz for a while
  • Marantz 2330 has gobs of bass. I like bass and normally listen with loudness on (I know, some of you are aghast, but in the end, it is what I like). For this 2330, the bass is where I like to hear it without loudness on AND with bass tone control set to flat!
  • Power...Holy hell....the chorus II's are good with the Au555A's 25 watts. However, I didn't know that my KLF30s or my RF7's could sound so good. I don't think I realized they could use quite a bit more wattage to bloom. I had read about it, but those speakers are new to my house and I hadn't yet put anything more than 25 watts to them. No joke, that both of the KLF30's and RF7s could sustain continuous sound pressure readings at 110 db 3 meters away with no distortion and with body shaking bass that was an almost religious experience
  • In listening to many different types of music from hard rock to classical. Anything processed and hard rock, the Marantz excels, and as mentioned, on the two klipsch models that can use the extra power, the 2330 clearly shines.
  • Things like the chimes in Holly Cole's "Train Song" are hard to pick out on the 2330, but very discernable on the AU555A.
  • No listening fatigue (common for me in say a pioneer sx1050) at sustained 90db listening sessions
Overall, fantastic sound for me; a clear strength in processed music and rock and roll.
It is less boomy and warm than lower wattage marantz receivers I've rebuilt (2216b, 2220, 2226b).

P800 Board Finished.

I did not change out the 150OHM/5w -> 150OHM/7W. Other than that, I followed Lee's 2325 choices except for a few differences in the circuit. I thought that the OMRON LY2-0 would fit, but it DOES not, so kept old relay. It was working fine. Other than the diodes, I didn't change any of the resistors. Not sure if I should change the pair of 2SC1318 → KSC2690 or not! Please chime in, if I should while the board is still out.
