Marantz 3200 Pre-Amp

So, I ran out of open units to recap and I figured I do one of the pre-amps. I opened up a 3200 only to find that someone had already re-capped this unit, yea and boo. Good that it is done, bad means I have to find something else to play with. I do have a question. ...this unit has a 220uf 450wv cap on the power supply. When I look up that number, I get nothing except a discontinued Panasonic from Mouser. What does the WV after the voltage rating mean, and can I use a 220uf 450v cap in this application. All of the other caps have blow out tops except this one. It is a Nichicon, but it looks original. Any advise would be great. Thanks Rich

Hi Rich,
It's definitely not original, I have attached a photo showing my original capacitors, they have like a Toshiba logo on them, they are 220uF x 160V, some of our more learned members may be able to tell what the manufacturer was.

I replaced mine with a Panasonic EE - 220uF x 160V.

No idea what the WV is about.

I looked it up on google and apparently WV means working voltage, was kinda surprised to see a 450v cap in this unit. I'll order a 220uf 160v on my next order. Thanks for the pic. Rich
 
Rich, you have so many threads going on different units.....are you doing one with each hand?? :rflmao: Great looking work! No better way to learn than to just immerse yourself in it for a while. :thumbsup:
 
You really have your hands full don't you!

Enjoy it while you can. I broke my neck in 2005 which ended my days of enjoying myself doing that kind of stuff.

To be honest, my hands are full doing this because it gives me some form of relaxation and purpose. My wife was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2009 and was forced to leave her job of 18 years. She was pretty much at the point where I wasn't comfortable for her to be alone very quickly and I also left my job of 27 years in 2010. I have pretty much been confined to our house caring for her since then and I am the kinda person that wants to be useful and contribute. I tried to work from home, but programming usually requires you to spend uninterrupted time and I am interrupted frequently, so that did not work out. I started collecting Marantz' about 4 years ago, and then found this site and started to slowly work on my units. I am still afraid to take any of the 'challenging' and expensive units, for fear I will screw something up ( I had to send two units I 'fixed' to a tech to find what I did wrong, both were caps in backwards because the silkscreen on the PC board was wrong). Now I pretty much look for cheap, easy, dirty units that look like they have some life in them that I can make whole again. I have another 2015 coming the week (it's a pretty awesome unit for its size). I appreciate all the support and conversation on this site, it kinda keeps me going as pretty much, people have stopped visiting. I is very hard for anyone who knew Kim to see her this way, especially being only 60 years old. Thanks again for being here everyone, I really was in AK withdrawal when the site was down! Rich
 
Sorry to hear about your neck Airtime, thank you for contributing on AK, it really helps us who are lost on our journey to restore the past. Last year I tore my bicep from my elbow trying to lift one of my motorcycles and had to have surgery to re-attach it, six months I couldn't lift anything with my right arm and now my hand is still numb and not right, but I don't think I will go under the knife again. Sucks getting old. Thanks again Rich
 
Sorry to hear about your wife. Alzheimer's is a terrible condition - especially in someone as young as your wife. My wife is an RN who works in senior home care. The company she works for also has an adult daycare that mostly has Alzheimer's and Dementia patients as clients. I have spent a fair amount of time at the facility, and the heartbreak and life changes that go with these diseases are truly terrible things. Kudos for doing what it takes to take care of your wife. And keep the rebuilds going. Sounds like good therapy for you. :beerchug:
 
All I can say is hang in there Rich. Also DO reach to county and state services to help you out. They are there but you have to find them. You're not alone. I had a lot of patients with dementia and it's a condition/disease that effects the family and not the patient. I've spoken to a few neurologists over the years and they all agree that the patient is not even aware of there own changes or who they once were. Basically there're gone. Like I've always told my patients, don't neglect your health or well being because, your wife now depends on you. So don't get burnt out or sick. Take care of yourself as well. It's not being selfish it's reality.
 
So, I opened my other 3200 just to see and the values in the one pictured about have all been increased from the stock caps when whoever did the re-cap performed the work. I went ahead and re-capped what I could in the second 3200, did not have any 100v caps, so they are on order. I think I will go back to the first 3200 (pictured above) and put the original values in with Nichicon's as that is what I use (they just look so much better installed than Elna's). I never change the uf value and very rarely change the voltage (only if I have something close), I figure they designed it, I just want to make it sound like was designed. Thanks Rich

Update on the first 3200, I went back in to check the values and realized that this is a European model with a 120/240 switch on the back and someone changed the cord to a U.S. style. Would this be why the power supply cap is a 450v? It looks as if whoever recapped it originally, installed all 100v caps, except the big one which is a 450v. I think they doubled all the voltage values when they recapped. Do the cap values in a European model vary from the U.S. model on anything but the power supply? The U.S. model (3200-2) and the European model (3200-1) both have 100v caps on the power supply apart from the large cap (160v in U.S. model and 450v in recapped European) Thanks for any insight! Hi Rich,
My 3200 post #2 above is a multi voltage version, so I think they all had the 160V cap.

I agree with Flax. I've never seen anything else other than the power transformer to make for a 220Vac unit or one that can be wired for 110 or 220. I bet it was a case of what was available or on hand that a 450V part was used.
 
I looked in the SM and it show 220uf 160v for both U.S. and EU, that's what I am putting back in. Could have been the lead spacing also, couldn't find a 12mm, closest was a 10mm. I kinda figured the only difference is additional windings in the transformer. Thanks guys. Rich
