Marantz 4400 case question

I recently acquired a Marantz 4400 with a walnut case. Unlike my 2230 & 2245, the 4400 does not have a faux metal case inside the wood case. Is this normal?
Also, does everyone here keep their metal case on inside the wood case?

Marantz folklore has it that when these receivers were purchased new, and the buyer wanted the wood cabinet, many dealers removed the metal cover and replaced it with the wood. I have the same situation with my 4140 quad integrated amp that has the walnut cabinet without the metal case underneath.
Oddly enough, I recently picked up a 2325 that has the walnut cabinet yet has the faux metal case underneath. After about an hour playing time even at low volume, I did notice the metal grille on the wood cabinet got quite warm. It will be going in for service soon anyway but when it comes back, I plan to remove the metal case before reinstalling the wood cabinet in the interest of increasing its ability to allow heat to escape. Or maybe that is what the previous owner was trying to accomplish as well.

I bought 2 NOS cabs for my 140 and 3200. I left the sheetmetal on, but put a small AC powered fan on the cab vent. Keeps the amp cool at all times.

Mine came with the metal case. I think its safer to have something catch fire under the metal than be in direct contact with a wood case. Thats if....something were ever to catch.
