Marantz 4400 no lights.....?

Hmm- i had this happen with Yuri's Marantz 18- ended up being a bad transistor on the mpx board, as for the 4400 iirc, I haven't run into that yet.
 
No stereo display, can you verify with a scope in xy mode and 2 probes, one on each speaker output, that you are getting stereo output?
 
The only way to "get it out" is to desolder all the wires, if you are just looking to recap there are only 3 or so wires preventing you from flipping the board , they are a pain to access.Desolder the wires and flip it, it's THEE worst board to redo in the 4400.
 
I ordered the 2bp1 and mounting socket. The items should be here in a few days. I hope it is an easy install.
I have been testing the unit and all modes seem to work fine. I am 'only' getting a diagonal line on the scope. When I change to varimatrix mode, I get a kinda' pyramid with contour control at max. I am not getting a 'stereo' scope as is indicated in the manual.........any ideas? I definitely have stereo sound. Both on radio and aux input...

Ok, so when you tune stereo in FM mode the stereo lamp light's up, you get stereo sound and the line is just a line.

Will have to look at the schematic.
 
Yes...FM stereo tuned and stereo light on. Line is just line. I would think the scope would 'twirl' more...like what is indicated in the user manual. I just have a diagonal line that extends and retracts at the ends......
 
Connect a test source to only one of the quad or stereo RCA inputs at a time. In quad the scope should point in the direction of the channel you have connected. Move the test input around around from RF to LF to RR to LR . The scope should follow, just like the animation in my signature :)

In stereo the right channel is the x axis and the left is the y axis. ( might have that backwards ).

If the sound on the speakers follows your input movement correctly and the scope does not , it could be the diode matrix board has issues. Or maybe your fm is not really stereo and the light is coming on incorrectly.

Yes as jstang says diode matrix board, there are 4 fets (2sk30's) on this board. Previous scope repairs from AK reference talk about this board and a fet going bad. It's PF01, the tone control/diode matrix board.
 
Ok guys...I changed the 4 sk30's on the diode matrix board.........no difference. I still have the expanding/retracting diagonal line on the scope. I definitely have STEREO sound on FM and AUX/CD-4(cd p-layer).

Could it be a problem with the 4 sk30's on the scope board? Voltage-wise they all measure nicely.

Maybe it is normal for THIS unit...?

OR could it be something has blown in the scope? (Getting a new 2bp1 soon anyway...)

EDIT: OK...so we may have a problem.........I started checking my (cd) line input to AUX.......using ONLY the LEFT line out from the cd player and connecting to any L/R input(aux/tape1/tape2) of the unit...I HAVE SOUND IN BOTH CHANNELS.........using the BALANCE does not change anything..(the balance does work though)....this is definitely not correct................................so.....where do we go from here? NOW it gets interesting!

The REMOTE/LOCAL switch is clean.

In FM mode.....all works fine.......balance and channels work as they should and I do have STEREO.

So........when I use a normal line input.....something is wrong BEFORE the balance section I would suspect...........somehow the signal from one(L or R) line input is combined giving sound in both LEFT and RIGHT channels. Where would the signal 'combine'?

Yes...it plays STEREO in FM. I have been listening intently to a lot of program material and there is 'stereo perspective'. The scope still just shows the expanding/retracting diagonal line.

It is NOT normal that the unit plays in both channels when ONLY using one (LEFT) line input.............I think this is where my problem lies. Where does a single LEFT rca input get combined so that it plays in both channels?
 
Exactly my point. I am a bit 'conundrummed' too. I should not have sound on both channels when just using a single rca LEFT input.....that is a bit funny.

Anybody outthere with a 4400 willing to give their unit a similar test?
