Marantz 4400 no lights.....?

On the mono problem...

1. Are all the inputs, aux/cd4/tape1/tape2/phone seeing this mono problem?

2. Does the tape monitor buttons work better than the the selector switch?

3. For each input, are all channels being blended into mono ?

4. Does the mode selector on the front affect this in any way?

For me .... It is critical to understand this. As it will gives you a idea of where the issue is.

For the caps, I would use what is specified in the service manual, I don't remember any bipolars in the 4400s I have refurbed.

Yes......all except FM radio.....which works completely normally..STEREO an'all.

2. Does the tape monitor buttons work better than the the selector switch?

HUH?......no TAPE monitor buttons.....just rotary selectors...and they work fine.....except for the 'combining' problem.

3. For each input, are all channels being blended into mono ?

Yes.......all except FM....which works normally.

4. Does the mode selector on the front affect this in any way?

When switching from MONO to 2CH......there is slightly higher sound output in my earbuds(not using speakers ufn). But, the 'combining' problem is still there.

SO.....the issue ONLY affects the inputs.........not the radio/FM.

I changed the caps to 4.7uf 'normal' caps.

WHERE can the signal get combined? Somewhere between the actual input and the pre-amp board...........

The rear channels work normally.......no 'combining'.

jstang.....check post #62....I have answered your questions 'in your post'.

I just cant fathom where the single rca input signal is getting 'combined'..........issue only affecting external inputs(aux/tape/phono).

I have checked and re-screwed all grounds.........I can't find any funky wiring/shorts/loose connections/etc. Does all sound from the inputs go through the Dolby unit?

I have been looking a lot at the block diagram in the UM. Since the FM works normally and the FM output goes through the function selector switch also.........it has to be something BEFORE the function selector switch.....and before the switch, there is nothing! Scratch head!

What could 'short' all the inputs and not affect the FM????

(jeeeez Marantz!)

On those 4.7uF caps on the tone control board, the one I last did were bipolars and I used Nichicon Muse series there, Mouser 647-UES1E4R7MDM.

Originally they were bipolars.......I initially installed new bipolars......after checking the scat' and parts list(which indicate normal caps)....I installed normal 4.7uf's........the units works fine..............................."........just the nagging problem with 'combining'.

Now you are starting to get the process... Recently I had a 2325 that mode switch was doing something along the lines like yours... Turned out to be a short to ground of the left channel after the mode switch but before the balance control.

Jk

I have been looking at all my grounds and their connections...they all look and seem fine to me.

Any other ideas? Thanks..........

Another clue maybe........when using the aux input(cd player) and the unit set to vari-matrix mode.......I dont get any 'dimension' difference when using the dimension pot.

This isn't normal is it? Shouldn't the dimension pot make funky/pseudo effects when in vari-matrix mode? The unit does not have an SQ decoder.

Edit:...just read in the UM that vari-matrix only works on the rear channels.........................the front channels are still discrete.

Shucks..........flat out of ideas..........

Besides the former described problem......I also have another one. There is a slight thump/crack during turn On and OFF. Can this be fixed? I just need these 2 sniggles fixed then ths 4400 is saved............!

IIRC, one section of the power switch delays the closing of the speaker relay until the amps settle down, on power up but open them immediately on power down. If the relays are operating properly, and you hear a pop, then the power amps might be sending DC to your speakers.

I cleaned the power switch.......less scrat now on power ON and OFF.

With unit set VARI-MATRIX mode.....using a single rca input to AUX right......I get just a point on the scope. Is this correct? Shouldn't the scope 'dance' more in this 4 channel synthesized mode?

Guys....I need some serious advice....I have a feeling that I am close to solving the issue....I just need some inspiration.

Using both L/R rca(cd player) AUX inputs....unit set to VARI MATRIX........shouldn't the scope indicate something else than a blue dot? Maybe this is clue to my problems....? It is like the scope isn't getting any signal from the VARI-MATRIX board...............is this correctly understood?

Voltages on the VARI-MATRIX board are normal.....................

It is a shame if I(we) can't solve this small issue........the unit works fine otherwise.............good output....doesn't run hot......tuner works like a charm......

Yes, I agree. But I have just a dot...................this cant be correct. Can a fellow with a 4400 confirm this? Thanks.

Unit using aux/cd4 input.....set to vari-matrix mode..........scope indication?

Here's some pictures from mine, excuse the dust! Here's some on AUX with an XM satellite tuner, I think the display is limited due to poor separation.

On FM I get a much nicer picture. The "ghost" curvy darker thing is some phosphor damage.
