Marantz Model 1060 Amp - main 3 amp fuse blows - help pls

Before you go and find a new rectifier, you need to know if it is bad or not....did you try what petehall suggested ?

Not yet. I thought for the sake of $2.50 and a 10 min drive I may as well just go and try a new one. I haven't had time to test the other way yet.

Is there any reason not to just put a new one in?

best eliminate it first in case there is another problem that might damage a new one .

now to be sure about this put the wires back and remove the 2 outer wires and see if lamp dims . if so measure the voltage between the empty pins .

I've now done that and the lamp no longer dims. Is this good or bad?

This means you are now feeding only the switch, transformer and rectifier, and you get no dim bulb.
Before you were feeding the switch and transformer only and the bulb was dimming.
So guess who is faulty....yes, the rectifier.....but it might not be the ONLY thing faulty..

So you can try out a new rectifier, be careful of polarity. The AC wires can be swapped, but the + - wires need to be wired correctly.
First try it out like you have it now, with plus minus disconnected. Then if successful try connecting plus minus again, always with the DBT in line.

I've put in a new bridge rectifier and the bulb now dims with all the wires connected. I'm going to attach the final remaining wire and see what happens

Nice ! but do it all with the DBT on, just in case.
The question is : just why did the rectifier fail ? Maybe it failed just on its own, or it could have failed because components downstream failed....

It's ALIVE!!

I put the bridge rectifier in, wired it all up, powered up with the bulb tester and it dimmed oh so beautifully. Just magical!

It's probably the first time it's worked in 15 years!

This is the bridge rectifier I bought.

It's amazing how a $2.85 part can render such a beautiful piece of equipment dead as dead can be.

So I wedged it into the side of the chassis with the legs pointing out and then bent the legs to suit, soldering the wires on. I put shrink wrap around the legs/solder joints to insulate them and then put insulation tape over the top of the rectifier so it would not come into contact with the chassis. Yes I did not want any part of the rectifier to make contact with the chassis!

So I powered it on and then put a multi meter all over the chassis to make sure I hadn't inadvertently electrified the amp! All good

So I plugged in my Phillips speakers I bought a few weeks ago along with the FREE Akai GX-A5X cassette deck I managed to fix and put some tunes on.

WOW!

It all works and sounds wonderful!

Many times no parts at all are needed to bring a unit back from the dead

We're very happy that this worked out nicely, woohoooo!

Now in exchange we want a few nice photos....of course we know what a 1060 looks like, but it's always nice to see the unit itself

Ok the lighting is very poor so please excuse that. I may add, I have not cleaned it at all either.

So the replacement power switch works properly so, yep, it's ugly but at least it's functional

Unless the previous owner took good care of the unit and replaced bulbs when necessary, around half the lights will be burned out.....

Hi guys,

After all you guys did for me getting it up and running this evening the right channel has developed a hum :-(

I pulled all the RCA's out of the back (Tape, Aux and Phono) for it to remain. I then fiddled around with the cables behind the amp, power cables also. Hum remains.

Gosh darnit!

I can't remember now, did you do a full deoxit job ? If not that is what I would try....
So, it hums with all inputs disconnected ? on all inputs ? What if you remove the pre-out to main-in jumpers ?

Some more info.....the right channel is now MILES louder than the left (how it used to be on the right).

I didn't do a full deoxit but there was little crackle when adjusting the balance and tone controls and none with the volume.

There is now a fair bit of white noise on the right channel with the jumpers removed
