March Madness - College Basketball 2024

Duke losing is always a good day.

I was watching Duke playing...somebody a few years ago. My son came over and asked why I was watching that game. I said if Michigan or Sparty aren't on, I root for whoever is playing Duke. He sat down and watched with me and within minutes Grayson Allen stuck his foot backwards and tripped an opposing player, had a tantrum that he had not done it intentionally and ultimately got a technical. My son said, "Okay, now I get it."

They couldn't knock the Boilermakers out of the tournament. That would have sealed their bid for the big dance. The "Bracketologists" think they are still safe with the loss, but It may depend on if somebody grabs an automatic bid via a conference tournament win.

I'm just starting to get my understanding of the state of the various leagues and who looks good at this point.

Last night I looked at the scores for the league tournaments, and at one point in the second half of that Miss State - Tennessee game Miss State was up by 30 points. I'd surmise that the final score really isn't representative of just how dominate Mississippi State was in that game.

I don't have a lot of motivation this year to really immerse myself in the tournament. The Big Ten isn't particularly strong this year. But there are a few other teams I tend to follow that seem to be doing well - and I just love underdogs too, so I'll probably end up watching as much as I can. Work requirements have me working next weekend for several hours overnight both Fri & Sat. I sleep when I can, which doesn't leave too much time for watching games.
 
Holy Wolf Bites Batman. Those Wolfies at NC State did some snapping and nipping and are going to the big dance. Don;t know how far they can go, but I knew they were a better team than their record showed.

Yeah, dang it! The Wufpack finished strong, five wins in five days concluding with wins over Duke and Carolina. They earned their invitation to the NCAA tourney :thumbsup:

I remember an underdog NC State team from way back in '83 lead by a charismatic coach by the name of Jim Valvano that won a championship in one of the most shocking upsets in collegiate basketball history.

I'll never forget that game. That's one of a few incredible tournaments in that era that made me a college BB fan years ago.

You generally don't beat those 2 teams on a fluke. Hopefully they will not follow what Virginia Tech did a couple of years ago and go out in the 1st round

I was in the NAVY and deployed, somewhere in the Pacific and had no where close to any real time information. I had no idea what was happening, I was only getting newspaper clippings in the mail. I do remember it being a short write up in the weekly ships news letter several days later. Every time I see that ESPN Survive and Advance come on I watch it.

Started pulling for them in the 73, 74 season on that championship run at 12 yrs old.

Funny how neither Coach K or Dean Smith cared much for that flamboyant coach and later Jimmy V and Coach K became very close.

I hope they do well in the tournament. They're one of those teams I always pull for.

I didn't really get into basketball until probably '76-'77 years. Didn't really know what was going on - I was 12 at that time, but it was fun to watch.

Heh. I would think that just about anyone would love Jimmy V., but I can see how he might be a little brash for the more conservative types.

It's always fun to reminisce. Those were some great years of basketball. I'm a fan of the Big East conference too, so last year was fun watching UConn crush the world. Looks like they have a solid team again this year.

I think they all got along off court better than folks realized at the time. They had a lot of respect for each other as did most of the ACC coaches. One notable exception was Dean Smith’s dislike for Rick Barnes when he was at Clemson.
I am old enough to remember media coverage of UNC’s undefeated 1957 National Championship over Kansas that included three overtimes and Wilt Chamberlain. My first 1964 UNC PE class began with our instructor playing the b&w video. Actually, it was mostly grey as the cigarette smoke in the building obscured the action

Last year was a fluke for my Owls of The Florida Atlantic University. I did my first 2 years as a Fighting Tree, The Sycamores of The Indiana State University. I left there before Larry got there.
 
I should probably screenshot my temporary status in 1st place after 8 games. Picked the right upsets, so far, but it's a long tourney. Picked an all B1G final. Wanted to go with UConn for the repeat but that's hard to do. Looking forward to the rest of the weekends games.
 
Looked like Colorado St. caught whatever Virginia had - 11 first half points. Longhorns played a terrible game but won to meet the UT with the funny orange...

I am guessing nobody picked Oakland. I checked in on the score and found the Golden Grizzlies leading Kentucky with 5 or so minutes left. Watched til the end and saw a lot of long faces in blue. I redid my bracket this morning and switched to Kentucky to go to the final four instead of Marquette.
