MC2600 - Is it the Big Dog?

I'll eventually sell it with my c34v/,SCR2/panlocs/MQ107 as a package but for now I have it switchable with my 2 MC275s , so I can go s/s or tube as I wish (C2300 preamp ). If I do sell, regrettably it will be local Toronto pickup only.

That limits the amount of potential buyers available for sure. You'll definitely benefit from the Golden Horseshoe and the proximity to northeast US population might help.

Yes - I did have them up on CAM and a McIntosh FB page (not general FB marketplace ) in the spring and most enquiries were from the States ,despite my "local sale" specification . I'm not too worried about selling them - I've owned them since 1996 (I'm the second owner - bought them when they were about 5 years old and had them serviced by a McIntosh service tech last year) and if we ever move houses I'll just hire someone specifically to carefully move the MC2500 and XRT-22s.

I'm sure someone from the states would come for the right price. I drove 300 miles to buy my first McIntosh arrangement (MC7150, C36, MR7083), it was a local sale but the price was perfect for a road trip! From what I've read, the MC7150 amplifier was created using some of the advanced technology originally developed for the MC2600 amplifier.
It's been close to 20 years and I still rock that setup in my den, with no major issues to speak of.
 
X2, I know that I’d travel at least a couple of hours away if I found something that I like. With something as heavy as an MC2500 it’s almost a given, because I would be concerned that shipping it will be disastrous.

The XRT22s? Well worth traveling for those!
 
Come to think of it, I drove close to 200 miles in a rainstorm for my MC501's, a "local" sale for an awesome pair! The original owner had them on the marketplace for several months with all kind of lowball offers made and rejected. He and I worked out the perfect price so we were both pleased with how the transaction ended. BTW, they both came with their original dual boxes.

Lets see, large Magnepans with 85 db efficiency would benefit greatly from 2600's. KLH 9's, too. XR 290's were tested with 2600's wired for mono and people used them with MC 1000's. MY XRT 28's are rated at 1200 watts but thats more of a music power rating and MC 2600's and MC 602's would be a great choice. I did lift the early 3500's by myself when in my 20's, but from then on it was two Strong people to lift those light weight amplifiers. Mcintosh was like Ampex professional. Throw a product in a portable carrying case with handlesView attachment 3302051View attachment 3302052 and call a studio multi channel tape recorder portable. If a Mac amp had handle or side rails it was considered portable, too. Hog wash. I wish I had had that blue portable case for my 4 channel Ampex. You could store tape under the tape transport very easily.

probably should have kept my XRT20s - I was the second owner - first owner was Oscar Peterson (traded my XR-7s for them ). Had both XRT-22s and XRT-20s for a couple of years until she who must be obeyed put her foot down .

OP owned them? It would have been hard for me to let those go. How did you come across them?

there used to be a very boutique McIntosh dealer in Toronto - Hi Fidelity Shop - almost exclusively McIntosh - I bought all my early McIntosh from them , including the OP XRT-20s . Regrettably when the owner ,Bob Byrne, passed the shop was closed. This kind of dealer is hard to find today.

That’s a nice position to be in.

My wife is similar, it’s not exclusively a McIntosh obsession, although one might think so with what I own and have owned, … but McIntosh does seem to continue being the main supplier to my obsession.

My wife seems happy to have the largest room in our home, one with a lake view and nice furnishings, plus more money than most people pay for new cars in a system, … all dedicated to one purpose: listening to music. We do it together, spend whole evenings just reading, talking, listening in that space so it contributes to the health, happiness, and longevity of our lives and for that reason it is in our opinion worth what the obsession has cost.

Personally I feel that more people in this world should spend time listening to (non-angry genre) music and keeping the blood pressure down, I think that it truly is healthy (mental and physical health).

OK, so maybe a pair of original Carver Amazing Platinums with the (4) 12" woofers in open baffle per side . . . but by the time you got them loud enough, bad things would happen to the Amazings . . .
 
Well, I did it. Never imagined I would but it certainly happened. I flashed the Power Guard lamps on the 2600 playing Tower of Power! (Still only using one atm ... )

I have a buddy visiting and we've been listening to the XRT22s a few hours now. He's a HUGE TOP fan - seen them live multiple times. So, I pulled out my nearly perfect vinyl copy of Tower of Power Direct (Sheffield Lab 17) and put it on. The bass guitar work on Squib Cakes is just out of this world and the dynamic range captured in the sessions about the limit for the format. I had it up pretty loud and he was just beside himself at how live TOP sounded - Bro, they're in the room! Then he points at the amp and sure enough, the lamps were flashing. I couldn't believe my eyes for a second. Yep, there they went again.

So, it is possible! My buddy Mikey G would've said, Man, you finally did it!

Good times.
