2002-2010.....

Thanks and one (two) more question(s)....what is the going price for a near mint C46? Seller is asking $3900.00. Also what are the most 'common' problems with these pre-amps(noisy,scratchy controls?,etc) Thanks,Huck

It doesn't have a 10k graphic tone control, which I feel is very necessary. I am always using mine on my C-34. The new C-50 has one!

That seems on the high side.

From a local CL ad, I had bought (and sold) an MC 402, C46 and MR85 all for $5K - all mint, one owner. I realize that's ridiculously low but I see closer to $3K tops for a C46.

Most of the controls are electronically governed, so there won't be the issues of ordinary pot controls.

Thanks....so that would mean that there would not be enough upper treble control,if for some reason the source(c.d.) was "bright sounding"?? Thanks,Huck

I think the price is too high....

You can get a C48 for that price, and you have the added feature of the DAC if you want it...

The C48 also has more sensible centre frequencies for the EQ. The top being 10khz....

they are on the C48 30z, 125hz, 500hz, 2khz, 10khz.

All the controls on the C46, are digital encoders, digitally controlled analogue if you will.
So the controls do not get scratchy because for example, there is no audio passing through the actual physical volume control itself...

I was considering one, but I was really put off by the EQ to be honest.....and I think they are a little pricey considering what you can get an almost new C48 for....

'Treble' Control

I had a C46 and eventually sold it to get the C45 which I like better.

When most people turn-up their 'Treble' control, they expect to provide more energy to cymbals. Many recordings seem to remove or greatly diminish the energy from ride and crash cymbals. I assume they do this so we can hear the guitarist or vocalist better. For me, this seriously degrades the fidelity of the recording, especially when I can hear a slight vestige of cymbals and know they have been greatly attenuated in the mix. When I listen to music, I want to feel I'm with the band listening to all of their instruments, just the same as they have live (in close proximity).

The C45's treble control is perfect in this regard.

This feature is absent in the C46. Maybe not a deal-breaker for everyone, but I found this omission particularly odd given how many other frequency controls' this model has.

I have a C46 and find it a really nice preamp. I use the Eq only occasionally and never really find it lacking, but that is in my system and it may not work for you. I picked it up form Andy at Audio Classics for a nice price.

FWIW, I also use a Bryston BP25 (no tone controls) and find it equally enjoyable.

I saw the same ad on that Canadian audio site, and as others have said, the price is quite high. I got my used C48, also from a Canadian seller, for quite a bit less; however I did get a very good price on it.
The words in that ad do imply he's open to reasonable offers.
