Tandberg, Nakamichi and Advent were three brands that were featured at McIntosh dealers where I've done business in the (distant) past.
I've owned a Nak 1000 and the classic Advent 201 deck, and have gotten good results from both.
In fact, I have a copy of a no-longer-in-print Barre Phillips ECM recording from the '70s that started life as an LP, played back with a Thorens/SME/Shure V-15 system and recorded onto a metal cassette with a top-quality Sony deck in the '80s.
About ten years ago, I transferred that tape to CD, and about two years ago, ripped that CD to a hard drive, where the recording now resides. It is very listenable - in fact, I doubt most people would ever suspect its humble origin.
