McIntosh Turntable Poll

Some other direct drives currently available ... for some reason, I thought McIntosh was going to use the Denon as a starting point given its a sister company. Never in my dreams, would I have thunk they would plunk a Clearaudio platter on a Mac amp plinth.

Not sure if the Grand Prix Monaco can be called a conventional direct drive as it uses magnetic induction with no direct contact/connection of the motor with the platter what so ever. Using DSP to control the motor and magnetic flux to drive the platter they achieve speed error of only 0.002%.

Sorry to hear all the negatives...having had some up close time with the 'table, I've got to say it's extremely impressive. Not only is it distinctly a McIntosh product, it simply oozes quality...in other words, you only have to take it in for a moment to realize it's quite a special product!

Nice job McIntosh...one of the true highlights of the CEDIA Expo.

Agreed. But goes to show there is more than string and rim drive out there.

FYI ... JVC used a magnetic bearing in their final generation of turntables before they bowed out in the mid-'80s. Their last great table, the QL-A95 had a speed error of only .001% (over a one-hour period!). Start-up to exact speed in less than a 1/4 turn. S/N 85db. .... Those kind of specs would make any turntable vendor today blush. That would have been a great starting point for McIntosh start working from in developing a table given their Denon family linkage.

Lol. In the background of the photo of the Grand Prix Monaco is a rack full of what appear to be cd's.

fantastic CEDIA photos- quality is awesome. Ok, the Mac TT still looks pretty ordinary to me. I asked my wife what she thought- looks like some 'industrial thing they have stuck a meter and a silly round thing on'. In her words 'butt ugly'.

Great pics! The facia on that table just looks totally WRONG! I adore the Mcintosh look, but this just doesn't work. It looks like a fake facade building on a movie set. Nope, it just does not work.

MT10 Turntable

You guyz just don't get it, do you? Mc shows you this MT-10 only to return weeks/months later and show you the real deal. This can't be it, can it??? Would much rather have seen McIntosh try to attain the rights to re-introduce a turn-table like The Nakamichi Dragon with maybe a speed control and larger platter. :headscrat

I must admit I'm really sorry to read sentences like "we have sold/we are going to sell tons of these TT so it means it's great" or something similar.

In this way and with products like this one, we risk to go back in the period when McIntosh owners were perceived like "people who just wanted the VU-Meters" and didn't understand anything about sound reproduction.

Because this is the situation: the McIntosh "look & feel" is so evident that... it's too much. It's too much "hey, I got glass and Blue eyes: I'm a McIntosh! And if You have other McIntosh stuff YOU GOT TO BUY ME!". Just too much. Only that.

Did you see the table in person?

Ron,

In case you haven't noticed, this thread is ripping the turntable to shreds. We have only seen glare filled pictures from a cell phone with a couple of guy's butts in the background.

Wouldn't it be in McIntosh's best interest to release a good set of pictures of the turntable?

McIntosh could so easily learn some things from Apple on how to release products for maximum sales punch.

The table shown at CEDIA was a prototype. The prototype did give a close representation of how it will look and those that saw it in person really liked the TT10.
I just have not seen the negative response to the table from those that were at the show. Trade shows are about showing new models. The dealers and distributors see the products and if they like them they order and give us feedback. In the case of the table the feedback was build it as soon as possible.

Thanks,
Ron-C

I absolutely wish McIntosh the best on the new TT!!!

Cheers,

Ever heard: The Tale of The Emporer's New Clothes?

I do hope I'm wrong, and this does not turn out not to be the case. But perhaps people here speak more frankly than face-to-face.

Chatted with my dealer recently and he said they would not get the new TT unless required to by Mc. He thinks that TT folks are a different group from those that enjoy Mc's other products and they will not buy a Mc TT just because it is a Mc. In fact he believes they will most likely avoid the Mc TT because of its looks and because Mc doesn't have a 'legacy' in producing TTs.

.....a thicker, heavier platter-spinner-thingie, would surely help the stylus deal with vibrations from the SPL levels broadcast into the listening chamber....sure, a dust cover pretty much ensures the stylus won't feel direct spl's from open-air exposure, but what about the effect of spl's hitting the entire Turntable structure?.... could things be soothed somewhat with a taller, heavier platter?....that platter on the McIntosh TT might be a key to performance specs....have specs been released from the home plant?.....
