Mid-fi, Hi-fi... Difference?

The dumpster divers will be offended that you started out at $400, $400 should be where Hi-Fi starts.

Us dumpster divers don't get so easily offended. :D

This doodle is with MSRP - original prices. To see how old units rate just use MSRP price adjusted for inflation.

I think

1)you can get to a level of high fidelity with a very low level of cash, a lot of audio fidelity is simply how much time and energy you are willing to invest, in measuring, altering room layouts, reducing unwanted vibrations, setting up correctly etc etc

2) Attacking the level of a mans "Fi" is attacking his very manhood:no:

All my Audio set-ups over the last 40 yrs were not any "FI" at all,no classifications did I ever use!
My Systems were all called "STEREOS" period because Vinyl/Tuners etal and such had come out as being Stereo sounds/recordings/playing!
So my own "STEREOS" improved in reproduction & Sound as my own Ears did and we did it together traveling down this Musical Highway, much like growing up/maturing together and we both still are traveling onward today:)

I don't think a 400$ MSRP system including source + amplification + speakers + cabling and no room treatment is by any stretch anything beyond Lo-Fi.

Today's 400$ adjusted for inflation were 69$ in 1970.

"room treatment".....What is that?
Back when I started out and being fairly serious about it nobody even thought or cared about "room treatment"!
We all or at least the ones I knew, bought the "best" we could afford using very little info,as there wasn't much, and trusted our Ears to tell us what we liked or didn't!
Yrs before 1970 I myself personally spent in the neighborhood of $500 which would be how much today by your scale($3591.24) Worked great at the time and actually still does albeit after some repair surgery but hey nearly 45 yrs can do that to ya:):smoke:

Pioneer SP-BS21 - $80 per pair

2 x 10" Dayton Audio SUB-1000 -$220

Little bear tube pre amp - $50

Lepai T-amp - $25

Source - refurbished LG Blu Ray player - $40

Total cost $415

It might not be "HiFi" but it's far beyond Lofi

How about this:

Doesn't quite work for me, since fidelity is not monotonically increasing with system cost. You need to consider maximum listening level, room volume and LF extension of a particular application. All of those drive cost. You do have "high end" on the right end of the cost axis, though!

Cheers,

Otto

So it's partly subjective huh?

Of course 4315s are more hi-fi than, say, cheap Samsung HT speakers. But when compared to another speakers of the same "class", then it becomes subjective.

4315s are not more "hi-fi" than cheap Samsung HT speakers to me. I simply don't like the sound that most JBL or Klipsch speakers produce.:smoke:

IMO all speaker choices are subjective and cost/class isn't usually the deciding factor. For instance, I prefer a $600 pair of Magnepan MMGs over most "monkey coffins" costing up to ~$1500.

There are speakers that posters here have raved about. You couldn't give me a pair of most of those raves.:scratch2:

Well, you could but they'd be put up for immediate sale.:D

Otto there is no fidelity indicated on that graph. Those are market segments, value/$. I wouldn't know where to begin drawing a curve on fidelity.

Mid-Fi: like run of the mill, like Sony.
Hi-Fi: a step above in quality of build and/or sound.

I have a mid-fi '89 Sony amp that sounds really nice...but it's mid-fi. But it does sound good! Really good.
I have a '87 Sansui amp that sounds 'outstanding'. It's Hi-Fi. It's also a very high quality build.

Hi-Fi has in-depth, deep, real, natural, honest, live-'alive' sound. When you hear Hi-Fi it's like: "oh yeah...that's it!!" You know it immediately. Your there. You got it. No messing around. It's the real thing. It just sounds 'right'... No thinking involved. It works.

That's it...like that.

I've had a few Mid-Fi stereos that sounded outrageous. Would they be Hi-Fi? Maybe. I would think so. Maybe not Hi-Fi in 'quality of build' but certainly Hi-Fi in quality of sound quality.

If it sounds, and 'feels', most excellent to you...it is most excellent.

I've got an old Hitachi mini-component system, 15 watts, that I bought back in the mid '80sand it sounds REAL! Just outstanding. Like you ARE THERE. Would that be Hi-Fi?

'High End'...big bucks, for better or for worse. Hopefully for the better.

Hi-Fi is all in the ear of the listener. if it's right, it's right. And if it's wrong, it's wrong.

Sony made some really nice equipment. Especially for the local Japanese Domestic market. I really like my '89 Sony amp! And it still sounds and operates as good as the day I bought it. It's got the magic! It's mid-fi, but it sure is a nice mid-fi. It's a 'keeper'. Sounds great.

Those are some beautiful speakers... You know they really care when they use maple for the front baffle and a different wood for the rest of the cabinet.

Would love to hear them

OTOH they also make this
