My first hifi as a teenager was a MCS series. It was silver faced and actually had a real aluminum face plate and aluminum knobs. I think it was about $125 in 1975, which was a lot of money for that kind of stuff.

JC Penny's sold some nice gear under their MCS brand, but this one looks to be in the bottom 10% of what they sold.

I looked at a decent-looking MCS aluminum-face receiver and tape deck at Goodwill last week. If they hadn't wanted $29.95 each I might have taken them home. At that price, without knowing anything about those particular models, I let them sit.

i'm nearly 100% that was the system my babysitters brother had when i was a kid. it was pretty good, for the trailerpark. there was never a shortage of girls over listening to aerosmith's 'permanent vacation' and that cheap trick ballad.

I bought an integrated, tuner, and turntable for $260 on clearance in 1985 when my local JCP closed its electronics department. The original prices added up to $800. My silver faced MCS stereo was made by the parent company of Technics and sounded great for about ten years. There is no way that all in one box cost $2500 at JCP, although I recall that when cd players were fairly new there was a hefty premium.
On a side note, my dad's 1979 Bobcat (Mercury's version of the Pinto) cost $2995 new as an end of model year closeout.

Look at my sig and you'll see I like my MCS stuff, but by 1987, all their stereos were cheap rack systems like this one. Their last gasp of air came with the TOTL rack system's amp in 1986. That one had 110 wpc with <0.009% THD. But it probably still sounded like ass with all the other crap that came with it.

They did sell some great pieces through 1985, but you had to be real careful.........
