Modem Secure Password????? What the Heck is This?//

This popped up on my screen overnight. It does not look legit to me. Can someone with the AK tech team let me know WTF this is please. I'm guessing it is a virus or spyware but I just don't know.

What thread / URL were you looking at?

What browser?

How up to date are your Anti-Virus / Spyware signatures and system patches? I'd update them, and then scan your system before you do any sensitive stuff (banking etc) just to be safe.

I don't believe this is spyware or anything similar.. are you using a wireless network or any kind of router? Are you on Vista?

I'm using Win 2K and Firefox. This thing had AudioKarma.org written on it. I'm on a network with a firewalled router and restricted modem.

I believe the restricted modem is your problem.. Not an AK issue..

That is not the sign in for the modem or the router. In either case, the name of AudioKarma should not enter into it. This sign in is made to look like the one that Netgear routers use. There are no Netgear routers here. Googling comes up with nothing of use.

I agree.. it shouldn't have even entered the equation.. but I'm wondering if something in your network isn't wanting to pass the traffic without authentication..

Cable/DSL modem looks like it is asking for a password. That should not happen unless the address at http://192.168.100.1 is entered (this is the 'internal' usual address for cable/DSL modems).

I'd call my service provider and check to see if this makes sense to them.

It is not from our router or from our modem. I know what those sign in boxes look like and these are not it. In any case they would not display the web address of AudioKarma on them.

Me too, but a scan finds nothing and a google of the words comes up with nothing suspicious. I'm stumped.

Ak has a back door? That makes it just like the iphone. Jobs announced today that it is true that the iphone has a backdoor kill switch.

The weird thing is that this thing popped up overnight when I was not on the computer, nor had I been surfing AK or anywhere else before I walked away from it.

Note that the dialog box says "at http://www.audiokarma.org/" -- which suggests that your browser thinks AK website is sending the popup authentication. That's why I asked what you were browsing.

It's also why I don't think it's really a modem password and why I am suspicious of it. I could be totally wrong. I'm a security geek but haven't done much spyware fighting the last few years.

Btw, I should mention with as many zero days as there are 'out there' it wouldn't be too surprising if you found something new.

interesting i would guess that someone used AK as gateway to someone else using AK's addy as a passkey or some variation..
