Mofi Studiodeck crack issue?

Hello, I'm currently looking to upgrade my turntable and came across this locally. It's a Mofi studio deck with a crack around the tonearm lift. Is this an issue at all? They are asking $800 Canadian with cartridge.

If the lift works properly I'd have no issue with the crack.

As note, discussing the price may get your thread moved to Dollars and Sense, so I would not focus on that...

I am not so sanguine. The platform cracked because it isn't thick/strong enough. You could glue it, but that won't be as strong as it was originally, and it failed. So the glue will, too. You could glue a piece of aluminum under it, and that might strengthen it sufficiently, but it will affect the looks, and the selling price, if you ever want to change.
If you don't fix it, eventually the cuing platform will start tilting, and the other side may break, and then you are really in a pickle - the cuing pot needs to be held tight, and I suspect the break was the result of an attempt to cure tilt in the past.
I speak as someone with a couple of JH/Mayware Formula IV arms with the same problem. No idea why the cuing platforms are so thin, or, if they need to be thin, why they aren't aluminum, not plastic.
800 bucks is real money (at least to me), and I'd want something that wasn't a potential problem for that amount. There are alternatives.

$800 USD right now on their site. Unsure of the CND bucks, but I'd be curious how far they dropped it/or tightened that screw to crack it. Which cart are they selling it with?

Yeah, not a good place for a crack. It can be mended with an alloy plate, as mentioned. Not sure if the asking price makes the repair an attractive proposition.

Is that a part that can be sourced from the manufacturer? If so, perhaps ask for a reduction in the price to cover the new platform cost and replace it so as to have a like-new table.

I have contacted MoFi Electronics and am awaiting their response as to the availability/price of the piece that is broken on the deck you are considering @FatLenny......stay tuned!

I find the price to be high for a used turntable. I'm seeing that machine brand new on several sites for $899USD. Especially if it's not in pristine condition, not loving the bargain.

Canadian list is $1600, so the seller is asking 50%. Not bad if it was in mint condition. I'd talk him down by at least as much as it would cost to replace the part.

OK, so I'm really not having a splendid time trying to work with MoFi Electronics......the first email I sent to them described the problem (broken piece) and requested information on how to get a replacement part and the cost. To this, I only received acknowledgement that they had received my email. I again asked the question and got this response:

"Your friend's turntable will have to go to the factory for that repair. It is not just a part, the tone arm assembly must be removed to repair this issue.
Also, they will need the original box and packing to ship the turntable to factory service. If they do not have the original box and packing, they will have purchase them.

Please send the turntable's complete model name (there may be a + and a letter following), serial number, and a brief description of the issue to service@mofi.com

Regards,"

Ouch!!! I did not expect that. They are assuming that you can't do this yourself and rather than just give the price for the part, I get the "have to be sent back to the factory" answer along with the insult to injury of suggesting you would need to purchase the packing material should you not have that. I promptly suggested that my "friend" was totally capable of doing this repair and again, asked for price and availability. We'll see what comes back, but I'm not very encouraged to this point of the process......

Stay tuned.

PS - Is @FatLenny still part of this conversation???

OP, IMO this is not something you should have to deal with unless this turntable is the stuff of your dreams AND the seller is offering it at a much more substantial discount. Turntables are dime a dozen. Why deal with this?

Hey @DavidTT, yeah, that's pretty much what I'm thinking as well but not having heard from the OP since he/she posted the question we really don't know where things are at. I decided to follow up on this, partly to try to help him/her, but also because I wanted to see where MoFi would stand on the issue as this will be more information and food for thought for others contemplating making a purchase from them. To be fair, I've had excellent experiences with Music Direct, the company that now owns MoFi if I'm not mistaken, and my next step would be to go there and speak with the rep I've know for quite a few years now......I'll bet he would get this resolved pretty quickly.

Thanks for your efforts @Fishead and you've collected some very useful info. My sense is that MoFi turntables entered the market a few years ago with nice pricing and interesting features but I've been less impressed with their price hikes. I also didn't know they had been taken over by Music Direct. It'll be interesting to see what next for them.

You're welcome, @DavidTT. Here's what came back today from MoFi:

"Hi,

As the distributor, we can only authorize what is okay by the manufacturer in these instances. In the past, they would not send this part, yet asked to have the table sent to them for repair.
I will ask MoFi Electronics if they would supply this part.
We shall see.

More soon,"

As he said....."we shall see."

Following up on this again to provide more information to those who have interest in this Mobile Fidelity product, and Mobile Fidelity customer service in general. Firstly, I'm reminded that Mobile Fidelity is now owned by Music Direct and that is a concern for me because of the response I received from Music Direct......

My thoughts are that if I own the company that is the manufacturer, why would I not have authority to decide what it can and cannot do??? In any case, that response was the last one I received to date and, well, almost 6 weeks seems like plenty of time to provide a more definitive, helpful answer. I hope Music Direct can right the ship a bit here because I've had really good experiences with them in the past. Since we have not heard from @FatLenny since the first post, I don't suppose it matters a whole lot to him/her but it might help others in decision-making in the future.

The long wait is frustrating but I admire MD's arm's length approach to their TT manufacturer. As a distribution business they have no right to dictate the servicing policies of the manufacturer unless MD is doing the servicing, which I doubt is the case, here.

Kudos to you for following through with this, Fishead. I hope it turns out well for the OP, no matter where he may be...
