most creative album covers

No question, Tull's Thick As A Brick.

I have a first pressing Reprise MS-2072, in mint condition, and it's awesome. That has to be the most creative album artwork ever. I've never seen anything that compared to it.

Yeah, that's definitely a pretty good one. I've spent hours pouring through the reproduction offered with the CD version, and the type is tiny.

This is a long thread, and being lazy I didn't bother to check and see if it's been mentioned before, but Roger Dean's stuff always struck me as the acme of what the album cover should be. His most prominent work is with Yes, though he did other stuff, too (notably the first three Asia albums). His artwork is so profound, and it fits the music so well. The mark of a good album cover is that the music evokes an image of the cover, and that the image compliments the enjoyment of the music. If you tend to think of the album and its music in terms of the album cover, and you're feeling a certain matching mood from both when you do think about them, then the cover has achieved its purpose. Roger Dean never has never failed to do this for me.

The latest Yes remasters have vinyl-like sleeve cases and are high quality reproductions of the original covers. Unfortunately, the aspect ratio is off (i.e. not square, but rectangular), so presumably the top and bottom are lopped off each cover (all the Roger Dean covers come in digipaks, not jewel cases).

I always liked the Walter Rossi album "six strings, nine lives" which had a perforated cutout of a fine vintage Gibson that was about 3 feet long! Plus, it was 2 sided-front and back! Very hard to find one still intact.

Dave Mason's "Alone together" was pretty cool too and featured the coolest brown marble vinyl. You could get high just lookin at it spin!

Roger who?? :scratch2:

Seriously, he's only been mentioned about every other post in this thread. (slight exageration). I'd say yours is the most informative one, anyhow! He's certainly in a league of his own.

Does anyone have and can post pic's of Wendy O. Williams LP's, no, I'm not a perv, just want to see'm again:D

Craig

Well Craig,
just check out the cover of the 1969 album from Paul Rodgers c.s.: the Free.
Might have been Wendy herself :)
This cover caused quite a stir in those days

I hope I don't step on any toes here as I can only speak for myself.
I just think Nazareth's no mean city is the killer album cover ever.

If I reposted I'm sorry.

Tons of others have occupied my time(and my walls !!)over the years, but this one just blows me away !!

R Crumb

Anything with R Crumb artwork. Ran into one in a Vegas Record Store that was the best I've ever seen but with a $50 tag just for the cover art. Bummer.

My votes go to
1. Marshall Tucker - Searchin' for a Rainbow
2. Alice Cooper's Greatest Hits
3. Boston

The Wailers - Catch A Fire. This is the one where the top pivots off from the left-hand corner like a Zippo lighter.

I don't know if these have been mentioned-"Trout Mask Replica", by Beefheart. The Mars Volta covers. "Salty Dog" -Procol Harum.

There's "Do It Now, Worry About It Later" by Clifford Coulter as well as "Weasels Ripped My Flesh" and "The Man From Utopia" by Frank Zappa. Also "It Crawled Into My Hand, Honest" by the Fugs.
