I presume that the copy came from promotional materials, too.

That's not to deride the gear Very nice stuff. Worth the effort he put into his ad (whether or not it's a template provided by vFlyer).

I'm shopping on CL all the time. If I saw that ad I'd be fired up, considering I could afford the gear.

Goodness! I didn't even know one could do that on CL, didn't know it could handle something like that! Not that I would spend that much energy on an ad in CL. I figure a couple or few decent pics and a good honest discription and price would do. I commend the effort that guy made though.

No, they can use a computer so they must be somewhat literate. However, I find putting in an amateurish effort fits into the CL culture much better.

I noted that there is a link to a map of the location. Practically sounds like he's asking to get robbed -- Not a good idea. (Unless of course, insurance will pay out more than CL buyers.)

"somewhat literate" is how I would describe the average CL buyer/seller. You do know that grammar school children use computers now, don't you? Most of them are not reading Tolstoy.

However, I find putting in an amateurish effort fits into the CL culture much better.

I know that when I'm looking at B&O speakers, the primary thing I look for is to see if they are VERY SHINY.

It's nice gear, but the ad was assembled by someone who clearly doesn't get how to make something appeal to his potential market. Great gear, though.

Hell, I don't really turn to Tolstoy all that often. Okay, never.

I did read some Dostoevsky back in the day. Crime and Punishment is pretty good, but I never did make it all the way through The Brothers Karamazov.

I should have said I get more response from ads that I put less effort into. Most of my CL ads are no more than two lines and I never include my phone number. I almost never put in a photo. However, once contact is made, it is all business from there. This technique works surprisingly well.

Of course everyone on AK checks CL. However, AK members are a small fraction of the buying public. The K.I.S.S. approach has worked well for me.

A couple of years ago I tried to sell a lawn mower on CL. I put in 5-6 decent photos. The ad got flagged almost faster than I could post it. People claimed it had to come from a professional seller. I re-posted it several times, and each time it disappeared within minutes. Eventually I sold the mower via Ebay

I remember when you could post something on eBay without even using HTML mark-up, just basic text, and the thing would sell. These days it seems that you have to have fancy bells-and-whistles template-style pages to be credible there.

I LIKE the fact that CL remains relatively bare-bones. I hope this does not signal a trend for CL listings to follow down the path of eBay listings. Pics that show the gear and any flaws are nice, and well-written text is appreciated, but all the other fancy framing, backgrounds, etc... (which impressed me when it first appeared) is something I'd rather NOT look at. Long live honest simplicity!
