Musical Paradise MP-701 MK3 Tube Preamp (upgrade the caps or not!!??)

The $66 is just for shipping! So you either got really lucky BmWr75 and your customs missed the package or maybe you don't pay import duty??

Yep, I have no idea. My expectation was for the preamp to ship from Canada, but came from Hong Kong IIRC.

So before I begin any "rules of thumb" when connecting a pre-amp to a integrated amp!!? So my amp is a hybrid with tubes on the pre-amp stage and solid state on the output stage!! Now the amp has a "direct" rca input which bypasses the preamp stage! Would this be the optimal connection I should use!!??

Yes I know you'll say try the "direct" and through the amps pre-amp stage and see what you prefer (and I will) but "usually" would I bypass the pre-amp stage of my amp if a "direct" input exists!!??

Bypass the preamp section in your amp using the direct RCA input.

So had the Mp701 Mk3 around 2 weeks now and so far I'm loving it!

Have upgraded the caps already......

Spent around £100 on the coupling capacitors but just under £20 on the power filtering capacitor. I did see other recommendations on this cap but they were £70-£100 and couldn't quite stretch to that at the moment. Any recommendations on upgrades to the bypass cap would be appreciated!

Gone all Toshiba on the tubes GZ34 and three 6922's. I like Toshiba tubes, quite warm, but again any tube recommendations would be welcome!!

I like the matching cable ties on the caps, where did you buy the Toshiba tubes ? I am using two Teslas and a JJ.
Sounds great but I need spares.

Yeah noticed that amazon offered different coloured cable ties so got the ones closest to the MK3 board colour! ;) the 6922 Toshiba tubes I've had a while. My hybrid amp uses 6922's on the pre-amp stage so fortunately I have a number of 6922 tubes I've picked up of the last few years. The Toshiba GZ34 tube I just bought off the bay. £65($82) so not exactly cheap but sounds pretty good!

My most recent upgrade was the remote. The remote that came with it was pretty poor, not complaining coz the MP-701 is excellent value , but wanted something more substantial so bought an aluminium learning remote from China. It came a couple of days ago and is really nice quality if a tad expensive at £40($50) inc delivery from China. To be fair it arrived in about 10days which is pretty good from China to the UK.

I got the same little remote, that one looks much better, dose the mute work by any chance.
Did you find it on Ebay also?

Sadly because the original remote does not have a mute button I cannot teach the universal remote that.

I'm looking to purchase the MP 701 Mk3 preamp sometime this month.

Upgrade options on the pre-amp are ODAM reference caps made in the US for an extra $200. Standard caps are hovland caps made in Germany.

Is it worth upgrading those caps or should I just stick with the standard ones??
the example in the first image appear to be metalized film (too small in dia to be film and foil). May want to look for a film and foil but will not be cheap.

Anybody use a MP-701 with a EL-84 PP amp?
I have a Erhard Saturn 20w that I will try.

Rolled the tubes a few days ago to GE 5ar4 and JJ 6922, made a good improvement, but today I changed the caps to some Mundrof silver gold oil, and it's like a different preamp. Everything opened up, clear airy highs, wider stage, tight bass.
With just a couple hours on them, can't wait to hear what comes next.
From this photo, it loos as though the board has been assembled using Dale RN60 film resistors.
My question is, do they still look like RN60s when a real RN60 is set next to them?
Are the Chinese faking Dale cmf/RN series resistors?
All the more reason to only buy from Mouser...

Hi Guys,

The "Drive by Threadcrapper" has been banned. His post, and all posts responding to him have been deleted to keep the thread clean. Kudos to you all for trying to be helpful to him, I truly appreciate it, but since he hadn't responded to any of your helpful suggestions (in a week's time) it became clear that he wasn't here to get help, he was here to bash the product only. If he returns under any other username, please report him promptly so he can be shown the door again.

Thank You all for being what makes AK the greatest on line audio site

I have my MP 701 ( mk3) more then 6 months, and it works very well; of course we want to upgrade it . And the OHVL Capacitors are not that bad at all .
I found/had advice of an Austrian with Youtube channel ( IAM MAD ) , and he works with a German "BTB Elektronik Vertriebs GmbH" company, sellar of Tubes & capacitors.
They have develloped different kits ( budget friendly 200 euro ) to buy on the MP-701, depending on your system. I bought a kit they recomended on the MK2 , but it works also great on the MK3 .
1) change Rectifier tube to LINLAI 274B ( very open and spacitous ) and 3x E88CC S4A Performance TUBES , and then lower the Coupling Capacitors to 1,5 Uf , because the LINLAI is to strong, and here (on budget), 2 x Mundorf Supreme Evo Oils Capacitors of 1,5uF. I must say that this is a great Result. For shure the LINLAI Tube is the Big Star in this configuration , and the Mundorfs are more general , but a good match ( on budget) , and i don t need brighter , with the LINLAI tube.

I will now Upgrade this configutation , 1) the Coupling Capacitors , to AUDYN-True Copper MAX of InterTechnik also 1,5Uf , and they 're so big can 't close the case any more , and by-pass these with 0.01Uf Jupiter Copper Foil & a 0.001uf Audionote Copper Foil. And 2) also the DC Capacitor will be changed to a Jupiter HT BeesWax ( from 2.2 standard to 3,3Uf ) , and bypass it with a 0.1Uf Tri Reference of Audyn . I will let you know the result in a few months .

Hi,
I just bought the same learing aluminum remote control, but it did not come with instruction how to teach/learn. Do you still remember how to do so, if you can help post it here. Thank you
