MX120-What to do, What to do

I am reposting this as per Carls request, as it was deleted from the server for some reason.

Ron: I know your position on 1.3, that it isnt such a big deal and that the problems outweight the benefits and MAC's position on waiting for technology to develop and so on.

The biggest piece to most peoples HT puzzle is the processor. It is the control box and brains to the whole shabang. It is usually more expensive then the amp(s), more expensive then the DVD player, more expensive than the plasma or PJ.

So, I hope you can understand that when people are looking to plunk down 8,9 or even 10k for a processor TODAY, that it is expected to be the one piece they dont need to change for a long, long time.

A 3k plasma can be moved to another room or sold for $1500 but, a $10,000 processor without HDMI right now (like a 119) sells used for $3000 and that is a HUGE amount to lose on the hit. A processor with HDMI and not the newest 1.3 HDMI is in a similar position with no imminent buyers either on the new or used market but, price anything cheap enough and someone will buy it.

Can you understand and accept that people dont want to spend that kind of money on "old" technology? Regardless of your personal position and your companies position, have you not heard enough voices on these boards from die hard Mac buyers/owners to accept that your opinion is one of the minority?

So, while we are aware that we will need new cables, a new TV and a new player, ALL of those components combined cannot and will not cost anywhere near the price of a new processor.

That is why we want to buy the brains now and start building the system of tomorrow right now. Why we want to buy the brains first, because all of the other equipment is petty and "disposable" for the next greatest cable or the next best plasma or even the next great miracle sub 4k PJ with X brightness and Y contrast. Those technologies are fast moving and relatively inexpensive, but the processor is not.

I've said it 100 times, it just doesnt make sense to introduce a processor with HDMI 1.2 today as your first entry into HDMI when 1.3 is not only announced and promoted but, known to be the connection of the present and near future and already shipping on the next gen games and dvd players right now.

We all know that the receivers and PJ's and Plasmas and even cable boxes and standard DVD players will soon have 1.3, that is no secret or surprise to anyone.

From a long term value standpoint one could argue that McIntosh is the best investment.

then why are my 1 year old MX-135 and MVP-861 suddenly worth half or less than I paid for them?

I don't think so....besides, the 135 IS a pre-amp, and is used for STEREO....
caps or not.

You guys are real cute :)

You can reply with snide remarks like you are waiting for 1.4 or 1.5 but, the truth is that if you are on the cutting edge of technology and demand the best NOW, then 1.2 aint it.

If you arent using a stand alone scaler or switcher or something else to handle your video then whatever you have now and whatever you spent up until this point, can and will be surpassed by a $300 Onkyo and you better understand that while youre waiting.

The advantages to 1.3 are REAL and having it all in a single cable is heaven sent. Better colors, better sound, auto lip sync correction and faster transfer speeds.

Now that I think of it, maybe I'll wait for 1.6 instead.

And I'm one who agrees with that. But it is always looking in the past. We need to make sure that it is still true for the MAC products in the present.

Roc,

Chill, its gonna be some time before we see 1.3 anyway. In the meantime enjoy your MX120!
Chill I will for now.

But how am I going to feel in just a year or two when everybody is touting HDMI 1.3 and I can only yearn for it because there is no way to get there with an MX120? I know everything changes, and more quickly as time passes but geeze, I already know about 1.3 yet I still bought the MX120.

What's a poor boy to do?

Roll with it.

Everything we buy becomes obsolete, it's just a matter of time. The only other choice is to do nothing & watch Life pass you by.

P.S> Did you hear that Playboy is coming out with a Magazine for Married Men?

It has the same woman in it every Month!

There is a lot of truth in your comment. That is why I decided not to wait any longer to buy. (Unfortunately I am 60 years old already....and my hearing ain't what it used to be........heck,....nothing is what it used to be anymore.......getting old is no fun at all.)

It just seems like other brands are able to beat McIntosh on getting new technology out to their customers. When I started looking for an A/V controller, all McIntosh had available was the MX119 and MX135. I knew that I wasn't going to buy either of those models but the new ones that were announced (MX120 & MX136) don't seem to be that much newer in the technologies that they employ.

This whole thing has to do with survival of the McIntosh organization. Yes, it is important to build quality and durability into your products. However, I believe that it is equally important to utilize the very latest technologies in those same products so that the customers who buy, experience minimal obsolescence in very fast technological times. Otherwise we may go to Denon, Pioneer, etc. for our stuff. (I am McIntosh for life but others may not be. I want to feel good about my McIntosh purchases and feel proud that they will not become obsolete any sooner that is absolutely necessary.)

There are some things that will never get obsolete.
....as long as they are quality built and durable.

I cant believe the silliness.

Ive been watching this HDMI mess unfold & ive been watching guys bitchin at Mcintosh about the whole deal,im confounded.

Everybody who is blaming Mac for this that & the other thing, where have you guys been the last few years to not know that HDMI is not only a new technology but its ever changing,I would think anybody who is interested in HDMI so bad would have at the very least, put some effort into researching the subject enough to MAKE AN INFORMED BUYERS DECISION before plunking down multi thousands of dollars.

The info on HDMI is all over the internet,so has been all the info(way in advance)that HDMI was going to change again & that there would be interface problems between the two formats.

Im not trying to piss anybody off but everybody who is now bitching about their units not being able to accept the new HDMI format, you brought it on yourselves, all the info was out there in abundance & all one had to do was research the subject.

This is exactly what happens when buyers feel that they must have the latest & greatest, right now,its called buyers remorse.

I may be wrong but I think I am one of the most active, avid & devoted Mac audiophiles here. Personally, I could care less about HDMI 1.3 or any other future Technology.

I enjoy the heck out of my System every day. I have said it before, I didn't always have the gear I have today!
