I've read this post today and am wondering if the hum problem has been resolved. During my review of the pictures and the text, a nagging thought has come to me pertaining to chassis grounding of the solid wire ground bus wires. There does not appear to be a solid connection between the bus and the chassis which means that the solid wire ground bus may be floating, i.e. isolated from the chassis. This could be the problem which is causing the hum you are experiencing. The inside of the chassis has been beautifully painted "Chevy Orange" which puts an insulating coat on top of the aluminum (or steel) chassis and may be the reason for such "float". To determine this, scratch a small area (1/4" X 1/4" or so) of the paint down to bare metal on the inside of the chassis, verify the power cord is disconnected and then with your DMM or VOM check resistance between the chassis and the wire ground bus. A high Ohm reading would indicate a "floating" ground bus whereas a near zero reading would indicate that the ground bus is suitably grounded to the chassis. In the event you determine the grounding bus is "floating", connect a wire between the bus and the scratched bare metal chassis point and power up the amp to see if the hum has gone away.

Actually, it started out as an isolated ground bus, similar to a star ground scheme. The buzzing was very loud, until I connected the ground bus to the chassis. Funny thing is, the amp was nice and quiet with isolated ground, before the preamp was installed. The preamp is also quiet, until it is connected to the power amp.

The hum wasn't the main reason I wanted to rebuild the pre-amp. It is because of the poor frequency response.

The main amp will go from about 10Hz, up to 25Khz with no roll off. The preamp starts rolling off at about 12Khz.

I'm also going to remove the balance control.
 
Out of curiosity, where is the chassis/bus connection point? I have been straining my eyes looking for it!

It's at the back of the chassis, between the fuse holder and the RCA jacks. The wire is black, so it's hard to see.
 
Yep, that was it. Would there be any benefit to having bigger caps for the lower voltage sources? I was under the impression that the 500uf would take care of most noise/ripple anyhow. Though I suppose if the preamp had a lot of current swing, it could use more uF.


That error is because you use current loads instead of resistors. From time step No.1 they are drawing and for the end stages it will take a bit before there is voltage adequate to have it overcome the load.

Finally got the power transformer cover done for my amp.

Now I just need to bolt it on when I get the motivation to take it into my workshop:thmbsp:

Installing the cover made the amp much quieter. I suspect that once I cover or eliminate the added filament transformer underneath the chassis, the hum will be all but gone.

I had a hard time getting a good picture... So many reflections LOL.

Turns out that the remaining hum in my amp is coming from the preamp, and I'm pretty sure it's filament hum.

I've already added the 100 ohm resistors to make the virtual center tap for the filaments, but it only helps a little. I was hoping I could bias the filaments with some DC using a pair of resistors, but I'm not sure how much DC would be needed.

if I ground the grids of the 6SN7's or remove the preamp tubes, the amp is dead quiet. Tomorrow I'll try running the preamp filaments on DC from my bench supply to verify the problem, and go from there.

There is also an unused 12.6v filament winding from the main PT that could be used to run a 6V DC regulator circuit, but I'm not sure if that would be practical.

I had to use DC on the filiaments of the 6SN7's in my amp to make it silent, give it a try, it may do the trick.

Yeah, thats how to do it. I've had horrible luck with small DC regulators for filaments, they worked in the prototype but then not in the final build, when they did work, my preamp using the old 56 tube doesn't seem any quieter then it does now with AC.

Well, no luck on the filament bias. It still hums just as much. I still think that the pre-amp and power amp circuits don't like each other, because whenever I separate them and test individually, they are both quiet. I'm running out of ideas:sigh:
 
Okay, what happened?

Did the DC on the filaments quiet the hum?

It made no difference. I'm about to accept defeat on this preamp circuit anyway, since it's never worked quite right.

The power amp section is flawless, and can go from 20Hz-25Khz no problem. The preamp seems to struggle to go over 12Khz, and hums no matter what I try.

A few posts back I asked about a different tone control/preamp circuit to try, but I haven't gotten any opinions on it yet. It looks like it would sound better, but I'm concerned about the gain being way too low.
