My amp is too loud??

I would take the SX-626 over the Sansui any day. And they are comparable output in Watts, but I just liked the way it sounded better.

I'll take three left turns if they get me to a better place than one right turn.

I'm just thinking off the top of my head, but when I got my preamp restored, my tech told me that one resister had gone down from rated value making one channel hotter than the other. I had to use different outputs levels from my power amp to compensate for that prior to the restoration. So yes, you can get higher output sometimes, although I'm sure it's quite rare. But then again, we are talking about gear that has been around for over 40 years!

Interesting that two other people have experienced the same thing I have. My inclination is that there is something wrong. I can't see the manufacturer making them hot like that, and it not being done consistently throughout the product life. The 9090 would never have gotten the high regard it has if that was the case. And in my case, it was a 9090.

Laugh all you like about synergy. I and many others have experienced it enough times to know it really is a factor. You have my sympathies, because you must not have experienced it.
 
It sounds to me like the problem is that Sansui has more gain than is needed and the speakers have a very high sensitivity. If it were my unit this is what I would try: I would connect a pair resistors between the volume control wiper connection and ground, one for each channel. The value of the resistors would be one fifth to one tenth the value of the volume control pot. This inexpensive and easy to do modification will reduce the sensitivity of the volume control. Give it a try and let us know if it works out for you.

I know some of my thoughts aren't in line with what many think. And I've developed a thicker skin because of it. But, what do you want me to say? I've experienced this! I've also lived through the frustration of knowing something was possible, but not seeming to find it until I took those three left turns, and they led me here.

And I'm having a hard time uploading photos from the service manual from my phone... it says the volume knob is: 250k ohms (B) x 2 volume. So need a resistor of 25-50k ohms?

My only disagreement is replacing speakers to address the sensitivity of the volume control. That's a three left turns approach to getting to the desired place.

As I said before, if addressing the simple matter of volume control resolution isn't really the paramount issue then it's a series of left turns (trial and error of swapping speakers, receivers, etc). And that's fine, but just say that's what it is if that's what it is - this latter point being for the OP to answer.

Yes, 25 to 50k ohms. If it cuts the volume too much, then try a higher value. You should be able to find something that works without too much trouble.
