don't muck with the volume control unless you 1) analyze the circuit (eg is there a
balance control after it, can there be an easier solution that is switchable in/out, etc),
2) is there an exact physical fit, 3) and you determine the correct value, and 4)
willing to lose $ when you resell (buyer says the volume is too low on his system).
and of course, you completely document this and tape to inside cover with a forever
contact number in the likely event it needs complete reversal.
here are two tricks
1. build/design/use a voltage divider (low wattage resistors) in a box with varying
resistance to drop the voltage and use the tape monitors to activate. tape out to
this unit, and output from the resistor divider network back into tape monitor inputs.
2. add similar box with a single/multiple large wattage, low value resistor(s)
that puts this resistor in series with the input and output, use 4/8/16 ohms.
inputs from amp outputs and outputs to speakers. this drops the power. just
like cheapy headphone circuits.
idea is to stop hacking these poor units, turning them into hundred-post AK
threads on fixing a butchered units bought from flippers/hackers.
Keep those 30-40 year old units intact. the whole idea of external
processor loops, tape monitors, both, and others are to provide
this capability - they allow sound shaping and recording, and we
use it for volume control.
