My first Stereo was …

kits are the best! i did the am transistor radio kit and all those things with the springs from radio shack. i built a lot of stuff from scratch from schematics in dad's reference books and stuff. anything that i could build for my model railroad, i did.i could solder and i learned to etch my own pcbs by the time i was 10. that's what happens when you have a dad thats a certified electronics technician turned electrician.
My father was and Army Field Radio Tech/Instructor at Fort Gordon in Georgia during the Korean Conflict.

my dad was in the air force during the korean conflict. i think my sister has pics of him with some plane with a mouth and teeth painted on it. i know he didn't fly but i'm not sure what he did. it's not something he ever talked about.

During the final summer of Watergate, I managed to assemble: Lafayette LR-75A receiver (15W/ch), two homebrew bookshelf speakers with 8" CTS woofers and paper cone tweeters that my dad built and a BSR 6500AX meatgrinder ... uh, I mean turntable.

I bought an MCS package deal, came with the smallest 20 or so watt receiver, tape deck, turntable/cartridge and speakers. Thought it was fantastic until about a week later, the receiver went kapoot for some reason. Got my money back and went to Playback. Bought a Project/One receiver, Pioneer CT-F500 tape deck and HPM 40 speakers. Later added a Pioneer turntable, forget the model. The Project/Pioneer setup was quite a bit better for not much more money. Enjoyed it for a few years and the bug started....Always did like a lot of the MCS stuff though in the day. Fun times.

First move up from a clock radio. I think I got it for Christmas at 11 or twelve. As typical for many RS the tuner still bested many expensive separate tuners, I tried with my later self-purchased Rotel Integrated.

That would be an F86 Sabre Jet (two variations)- the shark mouth ones were used in the South China Sea area so he was probably in Korea or the Philippines

First was a Magnavox AM/FM "receiver" with a built-in cassette player that came with speakers, with a BSR McDonald TT with ceramic cartridge. I then hooked up a Realistic 8-track deck of my mom and dad's to it. This was circa 1974.

As a freshman in high school, circa 1976, I went to CMC Stereo here in STL and bought a Technics SA-5370 receiver, Altec 891A speakers, and a Pioneer PL12D TT and outfitted it with an ADC XLM cartridge.

zenith.jpg I delivered the local newspaper to around 70 neighbors. On Thursdays and Fridays and sometimes Saturdays, I collected the subscription fees, and from that, paid for the newspapers. The remainder was saved in my nightstand drawer. A wad of currency and coins was used to buy one of these. Zenith Allegro AM/FM/tt

I discarded it some years ago after upgrading on the cheap from a local yard sale. Wish I'd kept it. It had developed a hum... maybe the WD-40 I used to try & degum the turntable got where it shouldn't have got. I'd no doubt have been able to fix it with all the knowledge available here.

It did what I needed it to do... pulled in low-power but high-quality FM stations from about as far away as could be. Was very happy with that. The record player sounded fine too despite being a ceramic cartridge; it had Zenith's '2G' cartridge. Didn't go very loud (ad says 2.5 w/ch) but was fine for the bedroom & listening to great stuff like the King Biscuit Flower Hour.

Cool blast from the past !

Fisher 400 and a pair of Wharfedale 60D speakers. I didn't care for the speakers and moved to AR-3a in relatively short order and the Fisher eventually left for a Marantz 7C and various power amplifiers. This was all 50+ years ago.

That’s moving up the ladder!

Sanyo System 220 for my 16th birthday in 1982. Was very happy as it was proper separates not a music centre. Lasted me for 7 or 8 years until the upgrade bug hit.

My first was a 1960's (?) RCA console that my Dad got off a friend. Tubes, drawers to hold the 2 TTs and a tuner. I never used the TTs...they didn't work. The tuner worked great and I had it on all the time. It is out in my garage right now. I am going to have to strip it down soon. The cabinet is shot but didn't have the heart to tear it apart. I need to.

I went all-out in 1978. Spent my entire summer job earnings over two years.

Fisher 190B receiver from a Two Guys department store.
Becker speakers and Pioneer TT from a mostly appliance store near by, don't remember model #'s.
TT was great on the cement floor of my room in my parent's basement, not so good on any other floors where tone arm would bounce anytime one walked within five feet.

i built this when I was 12 or 13. It didn't work at first but I fixed a few solder joints and got it working. I listened to AM every night growing up.

My first real stereo was a hafler dh-101 pre and SWTPC tigers power amps. I posted a pic of the tigers in the first stereo thread over on the general forum.

wish i still had the knight gear though just for nostalgia

i converted this to a guitar amp for band rehearsal. plenty of power with a 2x12 cab.
