My Fisher Electra Resto Begins

Hi Dave,

Congratulations! It looks like one extremely well taken care of Custom Electra VI has found a good home. I'll PM you a possible source for more information.

It's alive and currently making music and it sounds absolutely beautiful! A little lacking on the low end, but smooth mids and (somewhat) attenuated highs. Just amazing!!! :music:

More pics to follow after I do a little wire management and find a permanent spot for it in the house. This is definitely a keeper! :thmbsp:

Dave

Red:

Thank you so much. You are certainly right that it has found a new home. This thing is going nowhere! I have to admit, I actually teared up upon first putting it back together and hearing it sing. What wonderful memories that it struck! It's so hard to describe. My wife came out upon hearing the music in the garage and tried to get me to dance with her. I'm sorry to say that I had to deny her as I was so enamored with this thing. What an experience!!!

Dave

I have just spent the last hour, out in the garage, completely mesmerized. I connected a CD player to the AUX input on the preamp. The sound is just luscious. I had originally goofed-up with speaker phasing and got that corrected. Even through the original speakers it is warm and enveloping. I don't think I can go to bed tonight! I really can not wait to move this into the house tomorrow and hear it in the smaller space of our living room. What a wonderful discovery this thing called "tubes" is! And thank you to everyone that helped me through my first foray into this new world. What a memorable and truly delightful experience this has been thus far. I will enjoy this piece for many more years to come.

Once it is moved into the house and "properly" polished, I will take more pictures. I just need to source a new stylus for that Garrard now.

Humbly,
Dave

Geez....open blade knife switches. Haven't seen those babies in a long time. Probably a little tough to get a UL label by today's standards. It is a beauty, though.

NY:

Yep, been all through Red's Fisher thread and came up empty. There is, apparently, so little information on these chassis that I am flying a little blind. Not just by the lack of info, but compounded by the fact that this is my first tube anything! But, I can't put into words how enthusiastic and excited I am by this thing. I, quite literally, shake when I touch it and its components. It truly is beautiful!!!

Dave

That's too bad. However, most of the caps should be well marked.

Watch out if the style of furniture isn't compatible with the other stuff in the living room. You'll need to replace all that other stuff so it matches the console! Unless you're single, wives are the ones who cares about such things...

I'm so excited for your excitement, Dave! I have an old GE mono tube console that I intend to resurect in some form.

BTW, what's the skinny on the amp in the oven? Does it make it sound more tasty, or what?

PS Dance with your wife, man! You'll always get to keep the console inside that way! Major credit with the wife, a spontaneous dance, especially with your new console.

tensleep:

I've just walked back into the house after dragging my wife to the garage. Fired up the Fisher (had to assure her that "something" might happen in a few minutes) and put on a Fine Young Cannibals CD. Yeah, I know, but it just happens to be one of my favorites. When the music started, I took her hand and we began to dance. Now mind you, we haven't danced since the last wedding we attended, but this was special. The loving sound of my newly resurrected beauty and the touch of the love of my life was really quite special. You were absolutely right, the dance was needed and fit right in with my work today. I just was so side-tracked by the project of the day that I almost missed the opportunity to share it with the one that is most important to me. Thank you!!!

Most sincerely,
Dave

If the 480 is anything like it's cousin, the 440A then the missing bass and attenuated highs are par for the course. A nice smooth Fisher for sure but the miniature (relative to other Fisher gear) output tannies have limited range. Enjoy that unit. Keep it together to avoid significant rewiring (the tuner/preamp and amp are integral units) and restore it to it's original beauty. Very nice looking console.

I've just walked in from spending the last hour (or so) sitting on the floor of my garage and rediscovering some of my CD's. OMG! What have I been missing all these years? The Rippingtons, Mozart, INXS, The Doobie Brothers, Santana, John Williams, ... What else did I listen to for the first time tonight? It's hard to describe what I heard through those 45+ year-old speakers that is nothing like I hear from anything else, short of "being there". So enveloping, so warm, so involving that it's difficult to step away. I am so in love. There will be no grass mowing from this man for the rest of the year, I will be in an audio trance. All I can say is; Amazing!.

PS: I had the speakers out of phase previously, they sound much fuller now.

Dave

I imagine the reason he put the amp in the oven "upside down" as he said, was to reseat the wax in the transformers had any melted and pooled. I have heard of a few people doing this to vintage transformers when that had occurred.

of course I could be wrong and he's just playing good cop/bad cop with it, lol

That is great - I have had the same experience, "rediscovering" my music collection as I add equipment.

I have a thought about that, though. I think part of it is attributable to the new focus and attention that I am paying to my audio hobby. I am 100% engaged again.

What do you think?

I just noticed that the nameplate says The Fisher - Anniversary Series. Was 1963 a Fisher anniversary?

No, but 1962 was what Avery claimed as Fisher's 25th anniversary. Actually the Fisher Radio Corp. was founded in 1945 but Mr. Fisher used the date (1937) he founded his prior company, Philharmonic Radio, as the Fisher Radio Corp.'s founding date. Confused? So was Fisher's ad department:

So 1962 was the claimed Anniversary but the 1963s are the Anniversary models.

Thanks Red!

So I have an Anniversary Series model from the year after Fisher's anniversary with an amp chassis that no one has heard of? Hmm. :scratch2: Have I stumbled upon some sort of FrankenFisher console?

Dave

I got a little "cable management" done today prior to moving it inside. Also is a pic of the Anniversary Series name plate.

Someone must have really loved that ol' console for it to be in such amazing original condition.

Kinda makes a person wonder what sort of tunes were played through it over the years.
