I picked up a DUAL CS 5000 on the weekend. I bought it from the original owner, it's in great condition and sounds sweet!

And looks great. That Ortofon 2MRed is a nice cart. If it was used for a long time, you might want to get a new stylus.

I was reading a back issue of AIG mag a few weeks ago and he reviewed that table , the photo was of the black one though . Your's looks much nicer with the natural wood . He gave it a good review based on it's selling price at the time , $599 cdn ? if I remember . Nice find
cheers

The badge appeared on the 2nd half of the production run to dovetail into Dual's marketing campaign at the time. Label will pop off and the glue cleans easily without damage to the wood veneer underneath - looks MUCH better without that label.

I'll consider removing the badge, what did you use to remove the glue residue? I wonder if the wood underneath would be darker as it hasn't been exposed to light.

I added the felt platter mat. It's on top of the DUAL rubber platter mat which is quite heavy. Any problems with having the felt mat on top?

A couple of points to address:

"I'll consider removing the badge, what did you use to remove the glue residue? I wonder if the wood underneath would be darker as it hasn't been exposed to light."

AHA! A SMART AK'er! You are correct. It is a touch darker, but not objectionable. Smart, in the fact that walnut is the only hardwood to get lighter when exposed to the sun - all others get darker.

I softened the glue with lighter fluid, let it work a while then hit it with 0000 steel wool - won't touch the finish.

"I wouldn't put a felt mat on top unless you raised up the base of the arm gimble too."

I don't see the need to use an additional mat, but I think that you could, and leave the tonearm alone, as long as it has the VTA headshell. You can adjust the pitch of the cart body plus or minus 5%. Remember, when adjusting the knob on the headshell to make this adjustment, you MUST loosen the little Allen head screw in the front of the headshell, or it will not move the cart body - just the spring. After your adjustment is complete, re-seat the screw to hold your setting.

Thanks Bill

I'm still deciding whether to remove the badge, although I can always reattach it.

I took the felt mat off, as you say, no need for it. I've never come across such a heavy rubber TT platter mat before.

The TT is sounding sweet with my La Scalas...

I paid $300 CDN ($235 USD). I may have overpaid for it ?? But I really wanted it. I purchased it from the original owner, with original box & manual and he took very good care of it and hadn't used it for a number of years. It's in excellent condition.

Sold mine 2 wks ago for close to that. Was in near perfect condition. No dust cover though.

You did fine. It is a -80 dB table, quartz and belt, super looker. What's not to like?

You'll want to put new patch cables on it. Have to pull the plinth off of the chassis - 3 sets of wires to unhook to do this - 2 right in the center, and the patch cable micro connector by the tonearm base.

Fussy work to make the change, but worth it. Make sure you knot the cable in front of the tie down, or it's easy to accidentally unhook it if someone pulls on the wires.

Just picked up a super clean (almost perfect except for some light scratches on the dustcover) Dual CS-5000 (with the black base) with xc-m3 cartridge for $35 at the local thrift. Hooked it up to my hk-430 and it sounds fantastic.

How'd I do?
