My try at a Really Nice Rebuild Marantz 2245 2270

Nice detailed thread Pat...Thanks for this.

Could you please explain why you installed the bypass caps when you did the main filters. What exactly is their purpose?

Thanks,

-Vincent

Did you (socket) the relay or direct mount. I have gotten in the habit of mounting a plug in relay socket to the board. Oh yes, great thread, happily lurking along with your rebuild.

This one is not a pin type relay, It has 8 small lug terminals 2 solder directly to the board, 2 get wire and to the board, 2 just get wire, and the other 2 are open. So on this one the only option seems to be the direct mount method.

There is much info on the net about this, and you could spend a great deal of time reading it all. On this project I am working on (2245) there is a slight sonic improvement to my ears with them installed.

They are a great relay, super quiet and have a built in indicator that show the relay is open or closed. The first time I installed one I couldn't hear it close.

Thanks Pat...:thmbsp:

C714 and C715 the larger Vishay's are getting a bypass cap on the back of the board via the alternate pins.

The addition of Bypass Caps always gets my attention.

Are you going to consolidate the complete body of sourcing info at the end,
including board location, component specs, distributor and part numbers?
There you might want to also mention options that you would consider either as an additional, all be it, small sonic improvement, even if a significant jump in cost, or a more cost effective alternative, for those who are so inclined and there may be a significant price difference.

Initially I think I ordered items from 6 or 7 different places, as for what is actually going on the boards, it would all be available from these 3:

Digi-Key
Mouser
Parts Connexion

This rebuild is being done as a whole, where as what goes on the Pre Amp Board will sonically match/pair/meld with the other boards to be a nicely finished Marantz 2245. This does not mean you can not poney up and add a nicer film cap, but I am trying to be very careful with proper fit, and not having to modify any boards which is required with some of the premium films. I am Pretty sure there are some real sonic bargains going in this one which punch way above there weight class, and will make most anyone very happy.

Mmm, nice parts goin' in this one. :thmbsp: 2245s are sweet when they're up to snuff.

If you really want to get fancy, you could match the KSC1845s that replace the 2SC458s in the phono section.

Cheap meter from Harbor Freight, used it to match the KSC1845's (for the Phono Board) at an Hfe of 400.

ok the Phono Board is done, I want to run it for a short time before I comment.

The Large Vishay's have a bypass on the back of the board (see post #48)
1845 transistors are Hfe matched
Mundorf RXF's (they got an onboard bypass) (see post #37 for a better look at them) At 6 bucks and change each it is the most expensive film I will be using, with the bypass I am thinking a big sonic bargain! Other films I am using will be much less.
E-caps are Silmic II
Used 1N4448 diodes in H707 H708 H709

You know you've got to make this 2245 sound better than the Marantz 2220B, in your Capacitor Shoot-out.
No small feat; but you'll want to build on your past experience, right?
Of course, that may stretch you're budget beyond what you've allocated for this project.
Still, I like to believe that you're starting with an advantage this time, i.e., the 2245 vs the 2220B.

This 2245 is already shining, do not want to get too far ahead of myself here though. I will say that no doubt it will sound better then the 2220B. It just has such a nice effortless sound.

Yes, 'effortless'... an apt description. I like that.

ok....so I was pulling my hair out doing the 2245 Pre Amp Board. I got the "everything was going fine with my recap untill I did the Pre Amp Board." On this 2245 in my system the Pre Amp board to me is the one which will exhibite the largest gain in fidelity if you can get it right, and I believe that I have nailed it! (Many many combo's were tried on this board!) I stopped listening to caps, and equipment and actually just forgot about all that kind of stuff and was now able to sit back and enjoy some really nice music. I will say that this 2245 is now in the catagory of sounding special, and I am actually hearing things in recordings that I have not before, small details and shadings and instruments or back ground vocals that were once buried are now able to be heard.

C403 C404 C414 and C415 got this treatment:

Oh of course ecaps are Silmic II

If you are not liking the remote cap mounting on C401 C402 you can leave in the original films or duplicate what is on C403 C404 C414 C415. (But here they are .22uf) If you do hear the Mundorfs installed at C401 C402 you will not want to be with out them.

Here is the board-C414 C415 now have the wire tie back on, needed to cut it off to make an adjustment.

Now on to the Amp Boards which I have been dreading to do.
