Need info to decide what's needed to rebuild Thorens TD165

OG8, I am extremely happy with the 103r. Given the 16.5gr weight of the TP -11, it's an ideal match. It's a very honest, clean sounding and detail revealing cart. To me the secret of the 165 is it's ability to run LOMC's. When I get a chance, I'll shoot a quick listening session and post it on YT.

Here's a comment from a 103r buyer with a 165 on the Needledoctor site:

"What can I say but "wow." I do not have an audiophile vocabulary to express my thoughts about this cart. My first moving coil, so maybe I am just uninitiated. But it just rocks my Thorens TD-165. I listen to jazz and pop vocals and it blows me away. Some records sound like the band is in my living room. My amp and speakers both deliver, but this cart. just stuns me. I have not owned a high end cart. so my frame of reference is limited, but I just don't see how you improve on this. I have a nice Ray Charles Porgy and Bess box set that just kills me. It's like Ray Charles is standing with a microphone and a large box amplifier in the middle of the room."

Also forget the $379 price tag. It's $229 on ebay. I bought one from the same seller last year @ $218
 
Another question, of course. The aluminum top deck plate has some scratches and oxidation.I could try some Simple Green to clean it. What is a good method to restore this plate? I bought some Mothers brand Mag and Aluminum Polish. Directions are to lightly rub the metal. Let the polish do the work. I imagine it is a very fine abrasive. I could use this in same direction as the aluminum grain. It will also remove some of the paint lettering and border lines, unfortunately. Ideas?
 
Are you speaking of the thin plate that has the Thorens logo on it? I've never tried to clean one but they do pop up on eBay from time to time.
 
Try any cleaner on the area under the platter first. This way no one can see it if it adversely affects the plate. I've left mine alone, scratches and all. They go for around $100 on ebay.

Good idea. Will test in that area. Start with non-abrasives first. The metal polish I have used lightly on silver Pioneer amps with lettering surviving.

thanks for 103r prices and your opinion on it. Will keep it in mind. At $218, it approaches my budget.
