Need some advice on a wedding problem!

I have two friends that are getting married their weddings are on July 7th and July 14th. Since I am the go to audio guy as far as they are concerned they asked me to provide sound for the reception. I have Altec 1218a's I just finished up. They can handle 100watts Max if the attenuators are at 6 with the attenuators at O they can handle 50watts Max. I can either run a Sony STR 7065 or a pioneer SA 9100? I could run a Nikko NR 1415 but I need to recap it I could run it through a preamp and make sure it's dialed down to not melt the voice coils( I'm not the DJ and the kid that is has the magical power of not hearing distortion) I'm worried that perhaps I may not have enough amp to run continuous for 4 to 5 hours...at a pretty high volume what do you guys think?

How big a room are you talking? You consider renting a true PA system? they can be had fairly cheaply... If you don't have the gear to do a job, you are better off not doing the job, rather than start the job, have something break, and then there be no music the rest of the night.

I have the equipment to do a job like you are talking, but if I were to do a wedding, I'd be taking a spare amp if I had an old one I was using. That's knowing all my gear is in the shape to do the job even... Sine you are questioning the condition of your gear, do you have any spares you can bring.. just in case..

Just giving you things to think about..

It's outside in a back yard Altecs are pretty efficient just curious if I have enough amp I have two sa9100's a Nikko NR 519 a Nikko NR 1415 an onkyo 4500 mk2 a Sony STR 7065 a Harmon kardon 330c so I could have backups If problems arise
 
I think you should be OK with what you have, and since you do have a spare amp, I'd do it...


Those are easy to drive speakers, and get plenty loud without much wattage. I doubt you'll be running as much power as you think you will
 
I've had these going with an Nikko NR 519 and they are ear splitting loud jbl makes great pa stuff and stuf in general but I don't think these should be discounted similiar stuff made by Altec was used in auditoriums and theaters for years it will be plenty loud just wanna make sure I have an amp to keep up
 
Your Altecs will blow JBL EON's away... I see no reason why you wouldn't be able to do an outdoor reception with what you have... and like I said, I doubt you'll be playing it as loud as you think you will.. Granted, people love to get drunk dance and cut up at a wedding, but they also like to be able to talk.. amazing how many weddings I've seen them tell the band or DJ to turn it down...
 
Yea that's what I was thinking similost not too many people with experience with Altec horns they are pretty efficient
 
Oh I think you'd be surprised at how many people on this forum have or have had Altec horns.. me included... I sold my Altec 1" horns and went for JBL 2" horns.. and went to 1.5" BMS drivers in my living room... soooo... yeah.. lots of us know how loud and great sounding they can be at the same time...

Hi.

It really depends.

How are you planning to elevate those speakers? Full range speakers are always elevated for Weddings to get the proper dispersion at high frequencies.

Décor is very critical in Wedding Halls. Do you have a means of covering those speakers so they look more presentable in such an atmosphere?

You do not have enough amplification if you are looking to cover a large audience. How many people will be present at the celebration?

The majority of the amplifier’s power is used for bass. So, how are you going to attain the proper elevation-using floor standing speakers while achieving ample amounts of bass with 100 watts?

With proper amplification those Altec will rock for sure.

My reasoning for renting JBL EON was for ease of set-up and reduction of damage risk, not sound quality. I would worry that they will become food and beverage bus tables and targets for the little cone pokers.

Back in the day my 7065 got used hard. It did get warm so I used a fan.
An old unit like that I would have a fan on it.
 
get the speakers high enough up on wood pallets and ratchet strap down so they cant get knocked off ,you could hide the pallets with sheets ..also cover them somehow so they don't get damaged ..
 
Why not just rent some EONs with stands and, use your Altecs as well?

The Eons will create the proper dispersion due to being elevated and, you can use those Altecs for bass. Just disconnect the horn in the Altecs.

Since you are playing outside, you will drive whatever amplifier (or receiver? ) to power those Altecs harder.

This is due to requiring more volume outdoors for there are no boundaries (walls) like your living room.

I think that you will be fine with what you propose, but if there is any worry at all about something failing, then you might want to rent a PA system as others suggested. Weddings can be tricky/touchy and you only get one shot at getting it right. If nothing else, do an outdoor test run with the DJ and at reception volume. Good luck!
 
Personally, for a back yard, I think the OP will be fine with those speakers... 100W into those is SCREAMING loud, bass included...

The only real issue I see is no mixer.. no beat matching, no fades.... just source switching.. hard exit, hard start for each song..

doesn't the dj appear with them bits ? they do over here . and sometimes get excited and crank up their mixer to distortion and blow amps and speakers . the one reason i got a compressor limiter . :D
