Need some advice on a wedding problem!

The dance thing is true but bear in mind they are 100 watts rms max if you have the attenuators set at 6 I have a Nikko nr-1415 that i ordered new main caps for and I'm gonna use that with a pre amp Nikko will be under the table with a shear just one to a about half throttle the pre will sit on top so they can't get to crazy I downloaded virtual DJ for my MacBook and have been playing with it should keep the hard starts to a minimum and do to the complexity of the equipment I texted the guy who is getting married and said hey I don't mind u using my gear but I need to be running it too much money for someone who doesn't have a clue about audio equipment or electrical in general he said totally cool that he will tell his little brother one of my best friends that its his wedding and that's the way it is and those Altecs scream to me with a 50 watt receiver at half volume they are really efficient so volume shouldn't be a problem sorry no punctuation the fricken tapatalk app keeps telling me I don't have security access to the forum wtf?

Been there

Last November, I was the sound reinforcement to my own wedding. Or rather my re-wedding. Re upped our commitment after 30 years.
I was using a PA SCS 2600a, 300w 8ohm, with self made speakers,(each had 2 Eminence Delta15a, 1 Morel CAM55, 2 Peerless Tweeters) most likely could take over 350w 8ohm.
Handled the wedding and the reception in a 60ft by 240ft hall. 74 people.
WAY OVERKILL. Could only drive them about 70 watts without the people outside complaining:D.
One of the people there, has the bigger brother of those Altecs. Don't remember the model, but the horns appear the same, but with 2 woofers. He has had problems with the diaphrams. But he tends to overdrive his.
Mixer is almost a must. Cheap grills for the cone pokers.
I set up The Bridal March, intern music, and then Wedding March on a laptop, into the mixer, along with a mic, so all my youngest son had to do, was press play.
During all the reception hoopla, set my nephews Iphone up with the mixer,(preset levels)to play any requested tunes. Between the Iphone and the laptop, just about any request, were handled.
Kind of fun watching 20 older women do the electric slide. Yeah corny as hell.
Would have sounded better if it wasn't all digital, but no complaints.
After loaded up the Blazer, parked it at my daughters house, then drove from Baltimore to Atmore Alabama to see our oldest son during a very delayed honeymoon.
The pre planning and mixer were key to making it work out.
This weekend the smaller set(SCS 2450 and another set of self mades (Eminence Betas, Jbl mids, Fifa tweeters) are doing 2 of our grand childrens birthdays outside.
Being that I left the equipment at my daughter's house, after my youngest son's graduation party 2 weeks ago. Even with that amp only being 2/3 of what the other amp could do it was still overkill.
The amps are Pa type. The speakers are intended as PA/home hybrids.
Do a dry run first to see if they have to be driven hard.

Yea i think so aswell i originally ran them in my driveway and blew the neighbors away with a nikko nr 519 which to the best of my research is 20wpc i have the volume at about 60% i kid you not.

i think i got it figured as far as the diaphrams go i think it will be ok maybe ill order a set but i doubt ill need them horns are resilient.

the crossover is what you see its a cap with some resistors and a potentiometer doesn't say anywhere on the literature that you need to run a seperate crossover. I cleaned the pot and recapped with the same value uf but higher voltage because it was all i could find.

The 15" drivers the friend that sold me the altecs included them he said should be a close fit as far as sound goes because one of the original 15's the voice coil rubbed.

I sent both original altec 15's out to jamac in portland oregon for new voice coils surrounds and a recone. they used to be a warranty service center for altec before they went out of business. and yes they went out of business someone picked up the name and they still sell the stuff but as far as i know not the same people. kinda like when phase linear was bought out, phoenix gold, and hifonics all bought then their good names were put on crappy products.

I was just worried about my amp choice but after finding out that nikko nr 519 is about 20wpc i will be fine.

these people aren't paying me and if it wasnt for me one wedding would be using a pair of sony house speakers from the mid 90's and the other i dont even know maybe his boat tower he has no equipment except the stuff ive given him which he turned around and sold at a profit after i worked on it but thats another story.

I will post a full report good or bad and my amp cooling idea having done lots of car stereo installs with large amps in tight places with virtually no circulation ive build some cool cooling setups no pun intended thanks for all your help guys gotta love audiokarma all audio no attitude and there are some snooty forums out there about audio thats all i will say about that:banana:

I did an inside venue with a Kenwood KA-8150 (85w/ch) and two pairs of speakers, some larger Yamaha floor standers and a pair of JBL Studio Monitors. Laptop was the source. The room held 150 people comfortably and louder music wasn't needed until the later evening hours when the kids broke out the dance music.
This event also had live band and I watched the lead singer, after their set, walk over to the Kenwood and turn up the volume. The look on his face is still a fond memory.

About the only thing I'd even slightly worry about is an even dispersion to the crowd. A lot of things can influence that so it pays to set up early and check out the whole area. I run Altec 19 components in my main system and I've had them in an outdoor setting. You won't need as much power as you think. The 811&511 horn can get some sound out there. Will it be as good as a pro setup using JBL EON's or something similar, almost.

It appears that your N809-8A crossovers have been gutted, they're missing 2 inductors and 1 cap.

The N809 is a nearly textbook dual section 2nd order(12db/octave) crossover.

What you're showing us is a 1st order(6db/octave) single section for the HF, and apparently the woofer will run wide open.

Depending on the cutoff frequency determined by the value of that cap, the horn drivers could potentially "see" a lot more power than they should at frequencies low enough to damage them.

I would strongly recommend restoring the networks to their original topology, they'll sound a LOT better and give a lot less hassle in the long run.

Holy crap;( you are so right saw a partial pic on of one and im missing parts:( I don't know what to do I paid 120 for those 2 weeks ago of ebay:( I have no Idea what I need to make that work I am by no means an electrical engineer I know how to wire things but i can't read that I am so screwed

Rent something as a backup the wedding will not happen twice, well at least not this wedding.

Then knowing you are not under the gun try to find someone to help you in person?

You do not want to wake BrideZilla!

Guess how I know?

Also looking at your list o stuff.........901's are not the dumbest thing I have seen at a wedding by a long shot!

Hey for an amp will this work I mean obviously change the inputs and a stuff but will it work I can get one for $330 with like no hours don't really wanna spend the money but it's 100 watt tube power and I know horns and tubes are beautiful

That amp is a tube guitar amp. It is mono and unsuitable for your needs. Be aware that solid state amps run their hottest at 1/3 power. The receivers will be marginal especially if it is a very hot day. I would use that money and buy a cheap crown pro amp.

I'm not seeing a crossover network beyond a single cap, am i missing something?
This was a common mod to a few Altec speaker system back in the day.
I ran a pair of those 1218's at an outdoor theater for years and every year we had to put new diaphragms in the horn drivers. The original XO point was something like 800 Hz, and while that does work, it does not work at the levels that a lot of them were pushed to. I remember taking out some 18uFD caps and doing just what the OP's pic shows, adding a single (smaller value) cap to raise the XO point up to about 2 KHz. That takes the stress off the tweeter diaphragm and allows the woofer to start beaming before rolling of naturally. Never had to change the diaphragm in those 1218's again.

Beaming in the mids actually allowed the speakers to get louder before feeding back, a stage full of live mics can do that!

So for loud, outdoors, I would recommend the OP to use the XO that came with the box, someone knew what they were doing when they ripped out the stock bits. For indoor low-level use in your stereo, use the stock XO for sure, but don't expect the diaphragms to survive outdoors with them.

So, any updates from the OP? Everything dialed in and ready to go for wedding #1? Good luck to you and have fun.
