New ESS Heil Speakers!!

The LD10LR is $3494/pr, and the AMT is $2495/pr.
By the way-I found that blocking off the sides of the AMT (Heil) on my AMT 3's is a huge improvement in imaging and timbre balance-it prevents the midrange frequencies from wrapping around the Heil and cancelling each other out-perhaps that's why they went that direction with the LD10LR.
Was hoping for a 3-way Rock Moniter as well.

Haha funny story....last night I thought one of my ML's was dead!!! I checked all the cables, amps, I moved the cable to the other channel....left transducer in the speaker was dead....woofer worked....then I saw the cord on the floor.

They look really nice! The Limited Edition is extra sweet!! Their selling new Heils for only $399. That definitely is going to drop the prices on resale Heils and at P.E.

Oops!!! That's $399 Each!!!! :sigh:

I agree, awesome speakers-any really not a bad buy IMHO-curious how the new Rock monitor would stand up to the AMT3, or perhaps better a up to date modified AMT3.
Bob, try blocking of the sides of your Heils-you need to use acoustic dampening foam that goes all the way down to cover each side grille-per Ronc post-it makes a huge difference for the better IMHO-mid range clarity it greatly improved-hard to believe-but it works wonders. You still get all the air and spaciousness of the Heil, but awesome imaging to boot!:music:
I'm also trying the Audax HM130CO in my 2nd pair-Ron had good luck and I found a pair at 1/3 price on ebay-suposidely highly regarded as the best midwoofer speaker around, with clarity and details approaching ribbons speaker-sounds like a excellent match for the Heil.

I've ordered a pair of Audax my self!

About the foam, I cut two blocks of foam about 6" X 4" X 3 1/2" and put them on either side of the Heils. This improved the sound A LOT! Louder high mids which made the speakers sound less "metallic". I tried a large peice of foam which covered the backs of the Heils too but that took away the "all around you" feeling of the stereo image. I have found that these speakers sound best toed in much more than I'm used to. I have them pointing to the middle of the room to where I can see the outsides of the speakers from the couch.

I agree, they sound way better, but you can't block off the back. Alao it helps to fill the "v" void on the top and bottom with a wedge of foam.
It's strange how the mids wrap around the Heil-but it's a major, major improvement to the sound, and I recommend anyone with a AMT3 to try this.
Awesome on the Audax-I have the bigger tube, so I will have to build a adapter plate.
Let me know how yours works out, and how you atapted it to your baffle.
They are highly regarded-looking foward to the comparison to stock mids- but they do require a long period of break-in- from what I have heard.

The AMT3's are awesome, awesome speakers- and keep getting better with each improvement- I love it!!!:music::music::music::music::music::music::music::banana::music::banana::music:

That's a heck of an assumption to make.

The 10d is an odd-looking speaker, to be sure. It tilts to the left and right, but the Heil remains straight. I don't know about anyone else, but I preferred them without the wood frames on the top.

As an aside, it looks like ESS hasn't yet learned their lesson in terms of combining the Heil with a large diameter cone. That is unless the range of the Heil has been further extended well into the lower mids to cover the gap that has always been there.

Apparently you haven't heard a AMT3. It uses a transition driver to couple the woofer and AMT better. THE PS1220 more or less did the same thing.That way the Heil deosn't have to go down so low. Some of the best sounding speaker I have heard-IMHO- especially when updated to more modern design and materials.
The AMT1D used a modified crossover as well to deal with this, to a lesser degree of success.
And of course these are my own opinions- your entitled to yours as well.
ESS was far from a perfect company, lots of info here on the problems. Compromises, mismanagment, etc. But especially in the case of the AMT3, the basic design, has a lot going for it. With a few up to date mods, it's a giant killer, and that's not just only my personal opinion.
Not unlike any other vintage equipment-"if we only knew then what we did today".

I have great respect for the Heil driver. I'm well aware of the ESS line, having owned 3 pairs of them in varying sizes. I also know that a couple of models had a mid. Mine didn't. After trying everything I could think of to compensate for the gap in the mids and failing to remedy the problem, I sold them.

Sure, your not the only one that had a problem with the 2-way designs. The AMT3 is definitly a superior design.
Why they chose to stick with 2 ways in their new line who knows. The gap bothers some more than others for sure. I could live with the 2ways, compared to alot of other speakers I can think off, but will stick with the AMT3's-love 'em
The AMT1D was the best of that model, but not perfect.
Anyway, nice to see them back on their feet, competing against the rash of China speakers.
And I do hope they decide to make a moden AMT3, because they will instantly have a world class speaker to compete very well against the best the competition has to offer.

It wouldn't take much to put a 12" woof, a 10" mid, and an updated X-Over in the new ESS. Maybe someone should do it and then take them down to ESS and let them hear the difference. :D

I didnt mind at all my AMT Classics, Heil on top with a 10 inch woof to the front and 10 inch woof with no voice coil on the rear. Better than 90% of the vintage stuff out there. But of course, because of the Heil's fantastic range. Corner placement was key for me.

Most classic rock likes the mids toned down a bit, ie the eq "rock and roll smile". Jazz and classical a different story.

Not a bad idea-5-5 1/2 mid(woofer0 probably best.
I will post pics of the treatment when I get a chance.
Basically, you block of each side of the AMT. Foam blocks even with the front, and extend it back to cover each side (grille)opening of the AMT3 cabinet. Leave the rears open-don't block them off. The problem is mid frequencies wrapping around the Heil, and cancelling each other- not the rear output per se.
Also fill in v voids with a v shape piece of foam.
The mid,s may also benefit from foam dampening surrounding them on the front baffle- preventing baffle refections.
