It's not just separation, it's distortion. With two subs, each has to work less hard to generate the same SPLs as a single sub so they're less likely to be overdriven.

Speaker technology has improved since the good old days. There are small 8" subs that reach a lot lower and produce more clean SPLs than some of the 70s speakers with 12" or 15" drivers.

The laws of physics are still the same ... and I can agree as long as we stick with "some" and are only referring to SPL ..Once you start talking about depth of frequency, the enclosure and driver size are relevant.

All good info, guys! Thank you! Have been playing with xovers and have currently settled on 80hz for now. I still need to get REW fired up and start doing some measurements to get the best out of what I got. As mentioned, new amplification is on my radar. I'm also adding bigger/more powerful subs to the want list. Gotta pay down my credit card first! Lol!!
 
To clarify ..
The port in the Sony's is resonating at a certain frequency in the mid-bass .. It's creating a hump in the mid-bass frequency response of the system ..Now that you have the 8's, which are also undoubtedly ported, and creating their own frequency response bump, but at a lower frequency, plugging the ports of the Sony's with a dense foam could smooth out the mid-bass ... Not difficult, just cut an old couch cushion (or any other Dense foam) and push it into the port... listen to some drum and bass music and decide which way that you like it..
And I was expecting that raising the crossover point would probably be part of the experiment ..
(And you can do it with an old sock if you object to slashing up the couch)

Many Hsu Research subwoofers include removable foam plugs for either ported or sealed use. Ported is generally louder while sealed is generally deeper.

Yes thanks for the help ..and yes it's fundamental and doesn't matter whose name is on the box .. drivers smaller than 8" and in a small enclosure pretty much have to have a port in order to have any listenable bass ..and the port is resonating at certain frequencies and not at others .. kinda like blowing air over a soda bottle .. change the size of the bottle and you'll change the notes that you're making ..
