It's not just separation, it's distortion. With two subs, each has to work less hard to generate the same SPLs as a single sub so they're less likely to be overdriven.Always great to get an unexpected improvement!
Perhaps below a certain cut off, one sub vs two may not make much difference - 60hz? - but at 110hz there may still be a lot of stereo separation to be had.
