It doesn't have to lead to a bad thing. I had someone with 0 posts contact me earlier this year because he bought an amp that I made a thread about and needed help. He explained his reasons for not wanting to post in the open forums and I'm ok with it. He has proven to be a decent guy and we are having a very enjoyable conversation. Nothing sinister, everything is cool.

Providing context goes a long way toward building trust. I can't begin to list all the scamilicious PMs and emails that I get, because I am the contact address for AK. All the spammers who get bounced, before they even get through the door, feel compelled to send me an email describing their wares.

THAT'S how I've Lived my Life-If ya can't dazzle 'em w/Brilliance, Baffle 'Em with Bullshit ! Works better, & is a bit more convincing if you DO manage to have a Modicum of Brilliance to add to the mix every so often.... Lots more FUN, too...And its EQUALLY amazing how LITTLE Joe Sixpack knows about stuff every 10 yr old kid oughta know about stuff-And likely DID back when I was 10. For all this Wonderful technology that virtually anyone/everyone has at their fingertips for the asking, the amazing thing to me is how many people are truly dumber/ignorant than 2 Sacks of Rocks.. You wanna take One of the Sack of rocks, & BEAN 'em upside their Noggin.. But even that would likely NOT do any real good, I'm afraid..

Nah, you should bean them with a Sack of Smart Phones. Maybe something will transfer. Unfortunately it will probably transfer in the wrong direction, sucking even more smarts out of your friend Little Joe.

I get these PM's and they are always sincere and I'm more than happy to help them. Maybe I'm lucky because I've never gotten a spam PM in all my time here.
I think many of you are forgetting what a intimidating site this is when a newby. People say use the search function, but it's not very obvious where it is, is it? "Search" is in almost a transparent font so I can see where many may miss it. I know I had many stumbles when I first joined, trying to find a footing.
New people tend to be overwhelmed when they first get here, and very shy to boot. The most common part of most of these PM's I get is along the lines of "I'm not sure where to ask, or even quite what to ask." They don't want to be seen as idiots lest they be mocked...which if they see threads like this will only go to reinforcing such fears.

The long time members here are entitled to some privacy, any time spent on this forum by them is voluntary, we are not providing a paid service - people would do well to remember that when they are demanding answers to their questions.
The long time members can also get overwhelmed by streams of questions fired at them scattergun fashion. These questions are not directed to the 'centres of excellence' manufacturer specific sub-forums, just anybody the person thinks might help them with their problem. This is an easy way to get people's backs up - they have their own lives to live, and want to choose whose questions in forum posts they answer, (from their own knowledge pool), and how much time they spend doing it.

Oh, I DON'T think I've ever INTENTIONALLY been short, snippy, or otherwise been Smartassish w/someone asking a question, unless its been one of the regular gang around here-And even then, the guy MIGHT have a legit question. But MOST of the Usual Suspects, I think know me tolerably well, & know that they might oughta expect some sort of total BS response, owing to my surly disposition. But if you ask me a question on things I DO know a little about, i.e. cars, guns, radios, TVs, coins, you'll likely to get a 100% no-BS type response.
Bad form in my opinion is to use this vintage audio forum without being capable of at first saying "Hello" or something like that, for example in the introduction thread.
I do not like this sort of self-service attitude - not here and not anywhere else in a communication interaction.
