New or vintage crossover for A5 VOTT

At one point I thought about changing out the horns on my Urei 604G. I talked to Bill at GPA and he recommended staying with the Urei horns. He seemed to like them better than the multi cells on the regular 604G

The only thing I dislike about the Urei horns is they’re plastic. I wish they were metal. I’m pretty sure if I ever break one I’m SOL though.

The coil measured at the two leads is 6.2 DCR. Seems odd for 16 ohmer. Thanks

There are some 16 ohm 604E on eBay that show around 12 ohms DCR for the woofers. Your’s seems low to me also.

Better not be a dust cap!

That’s what it looks like to me, but it could be the felt that goes around the horn.

From elation to deflation.

Sadly, the original contents of the box have been replaced with what looks like 515-8G parts.

The cone number beginning with "34" is late, 604E parts would be in the 20,000's.

Sorry...

Thanks, Bowtie. I would have put this on eBay and ripped somebody.
Bummer. that's why the first one I acquired had the familiar 211xx. Well, I can send it back or ask for an adjustment. It's not really desirable, I guess, since the 515-8G is plentiful. The GPA cone is probably as good or better, huh?

The GPA cone may be the same, or very similar. I'm sure it still has value, equivalent to modern replacements. It does bear a factory Altec number, and includes the good wide gasket. I think those are more plentiful these days, but there was a good span of time where those wide gaskets were hard to get.

Even tho it's not a 604E kit, it's still the kind of thing a serious Altec enthusiast would just shelve and forget about until a need arises.

I received a partial refund. Come to find out, I bought it from Bill Hayes' son. If you don't mind, Bowtie, could you please double check your notes. Bill's son said his dad's notes said it was for a 604. Maybe something was overlooked? Please receive this in the manner intended. Thank you

There is not one part in that box for a 604E. I'm not sure how to convince you.

Inch wide gaskets do not fit a 604E.

Vented 416/515 style dustcaps do not fit a 604E. Additionally, there is no 604 dust guard in the box.

8 ohm voice coil does not belong in 604E.

The 35,000 series cone number is far too late to have been a factory 604E replacement, well into the ferrite era.

Actually, let's take it up a notch. 35402 is an EV part number from late 90's, and i will reiterate that it's a 515G kit. 35400 thru 35404 are all the same cone, and correct for 515G or 604K

That's as deep as i'm going to dig, and way deeper than needed for provenance that the contents of the box in no way match what's written on the box in black marker.

Yes, the correct identification of the box contents...

Note the voice coil assembly in that box is a bit later than this reference sheet.

Note the 2 columns furthest to the right. Where a dust spider or dust felt is listed, those lines are for 604K. Where a dome is listed, those lines are for 515G.

515G/604K parts:

^Lol. Where do you find stuff like that?

I’m curious about the performance difference between the dust felt and dust spider. And whether they’re interchangeable. I would assume no, or else it wouldn’t call out for one or the other.

Thanks for that. I just thought, considering the source of the kit, you could give it a second look, that's all.:) I still have the cone and I'll put it on the shelf, like you said. What about the 3000 horn supertweeters. Are these desirable? I think they are in working order. I searched and found Golden Gate Electronics stated on another forum, he can repair them. I might be able to get some of them, non-working.Thanks

That one comes from a generous veteran member of the board.

Just my wag, no measurements to support but it's somewhat empirical logic. Properly installed, the felt has zero impact on compliance, is self damping such that no part of it becomes additional radiating surface.

The felt can easily be installed improperly, effectively ruining the cone/kit. My wag would be that many DIY and 3rd party failed installs led to the development of the dust spider.

The dust spider OTOH by the nature of it's construction, must radiate a bit of acoustic energy as well as add a bit of stiffness to the compliance changing the resonance to some degree.

The dust spider however, is ideal for any kind of in-field replacement, and 3rd party/DIY installations. It would be fairly difficult to install the dust spider improperly.

Thanks for that. I just thought, considering the source of the kit, you could give it a second look, that's all.
No worries.

But, if you're gonna chew gum in class, be sure to bring enough for everybody. ;)

Are the ferrite 515/604 recone kits the same except for the dust cap or dust spider included in the kit? Same cone number and same VC number?
For instance if someone found two ferrite 515 kits could you recone ferrite 604’s with them if you got some dust spiders that would fit?

Most of the parts interchange. But, remember, there were several variants of ferrite 515/604 at different power handling and impedance levels.

Varying part numbers can indicate from nothing more than different dates of production or batches of production to indicating very functional differences such as impedance, power handling, mass, former material, coil winding dimensions, etc.. Outside of the EVI production there were probably "light" cones for 604's that went into factory studio monitors.

For instance, you can load the OP's cone, and VC in any 604, add a dust damper, or dust spider and call it a day. But, none of it is correct for a 604E factory matching load.

I called Golden Gate Electronics and he said he can do it. Around $500 a piece. He makes all the parts by hand. I asked him if he made the microphone diaphragm by hand and he said yes. I don't know what to ask. His number is (775) 772-6473. I got the number from his Facebook page. I'm not on Facebook so I have limited access to the page.
