New Power Champ..

I was just looking at some of the Ebay auctions on Phase Linear. I'm surprised about how cheap some of it goes for. Is it because a lot of people don't know about the brand? Sure looks like they built them very well.
 
The only SX-1980 I have had here was DingusBoy's unit, and at the time I didn't have dummy loads capable of taking that kind of power. Too bad...I suspect that it would have been capable of around 330W or so.

The D-500 would require a whole new investment for me to measure power. Unless someone wants to foot the bill, I think I'd pass.
 
EW Do you have any thoughts on using 7.5 ohm vs 8 ohm resistors as dummy loads? I was scrumming through the back of my local electronics store and found a pair of 7.5 ohm 300Watt non-inductive resistors. They wanted $5 for each one. I bought them. Just wondering what you think.
 
They'll work fine, as long as you don't need exact power figures into 8 ohms. You could also add a .5 ohm 20W resistor in series with it.
 
Often see stacks of the wire-wound ceramic filled mulit-K watt load resistors at military surplus stores. Even see some of the more modern fined variety, as well. But they are quite a bit more expensive. Up in the $10-15 range. If you have a Navy or Air Force base near you then any military surplus store will likely have a bunch for sale. Army stuff is generally much lower power.
 
A local electronics guy told me when he used to test the SX-1980's he'd use a 1000watt heater to test the loads. I don't know if that is really a reliable or scientific way of doing it.
 
Maybe the way Hams test their kilowatt radios. Immerse a series/parallel string for your needs in a gallon paint can filled with motor oil.

Well, I guess that doesn't make it the almighty king of the world, but 330w is nothing to sneeze at. It kinda makes me wonder what mine would do with a 4 ohm load. :scratch2:
 
i got the 700b but it is broken

i don't know electronics well at all and some of you might find this annoying- but i am willing to learn- it blows the main fuse all the time- can't evan turnit on- evan with nothing going in or out of it- it just burns them the second i throw the switch- anyone have any idea what the problem may be- evan with the thing turned all the way down- SHORT somewhere? i dunno- i would really like it to work though- any ideas- please help

this is how i got the phase linear 700b

a friend brought it to my house and he used to use it as a P.A. i guess- he said it worked once apon a time "i don't know when", but he left it to me and said i could have it- i didn't know right then what it was until i did some research- he had a biamp going into it- just started looking at it yesterday- i am wondering if the chord to them had a ground on it originally or if this power chord has been changed- currently it does not have a grounded plugin on it?

Yes, this is the way to go for short duration testing to just get a quick measurement of max power output. No reason to size and pay for continuous power disspation rating if one doesn't need that application.

One can easily get a X10 power (wattage) disspation rating from their resistors. However motor oil is not the prefeered oil, but rather transformer oil that is designed for this kind of service.

Phase Linear 700B - 445WPC
Sansui G-33000 - 375WPC
Sansui G-22000 - 295WPC

Dynaco 416.... Rated at a conservative 325wpc/rms into four (4) ohms. Eight output devices per side. And yes, relays tied into the protection circuitry, as well as front-panel fuses. AND, for those brave souls, all the protection circuits may be bypassed. And quite stable in reactive loads down to 1 ohm impedance or so. This as quite apart from "nominal" speaker ratings.

Phase Linear made some very big stuff, as did Crown. But after a certain point, "headroom" becomes meaningless in most normal household environments. I like the 416, it is my 'front line' amp, but 90% of the time my AR receiver or my Scott LK150 tube amp are just fine.
