New Tubes for Yaqin MC-13s

The 6550's will NOT work with the 13S.
I've had one for about 2-1/2 years now. I've used the stock tubes, EH EL34B's and the Gold Lion KT77's. I went all Gold Lion reissues for the small tubes as well.
I can absolutely say the Gold Lion KT77's are, imo, the best power tubes I've used, with the caveat that they tend to be a bit more floaty in the bias than the stock blue bottles. So it's something to keep an eye on, if you end up checking them out.
I honestly didn't like the 1st quad of them I got. They sounded "weird" to me. Sold I sold them, which happened quick because of their reputation. About a year later I figured maybe there might be something to them if so many people seemed to like them, and I got another quad, figuring if I still didn't like them, after 50 hours, I could sell them pretty easily. After that I fell in love with them.

Just curious - why won't they work? Is it a bias adjustment issue? I have a couple of small tube amps that auto bias and all of the EL34 variants work.

Bias and output transformers among other things. I'm not exactly an expert, but an amp has to be designed to work with KT88/6550's in addition to EL34/6L6/KT77. My Elekit 8200R for example, can switch between all of those. But I've never seen anyone do it with an MC-13S, so I assume there is good reason for not trying.

Hmm... I'm not an expert either. I can't completely envision, with adjustable bias, that it would be the overriding factor. I don't know the plate impedances off the top of my head, but I could see that being an issue if the values are wildly different. I'll look those up on the data sheets just to satisfy my own curiosity.

Cheers

I would be interested to know what you find out

Hi all,
Awhile back I got a great deal on a Yaqin MC 13s Tube Amp and I've really become addicted to it. I've played with the tubes in the pre section and currently have Tung Sol Ax7's and NOS GE AU7's. I'm finally ready to roll the power tubes. It currently has the original 6CA7's. I'm wanting to try a quad of EL34's and interested in suggestions for this amp if anyone is familiar. I also read I could benefit from a set of KT-77's and like the reviews but I haven't found definitive evidence they are a direct replacement for this amp. I am pleased with the amp and very surprised with the sound. I've watched several videos saying this amp will benefit from rolling but yet to hear specifically which tubes are beneficial. And yeah, I get the subjectivity of the matter. View attachment 1904790 View attachment 1904794 I'll probably just go with a set of EL34 Mullards in the end, but it would be nice to know if KT-77's would work or if someone wants to share their personal experience. And thank you for any input. Regards.
yes golden Lion KT&& is the top dog
