Wow, today at 11:13 over on the Vintage Solid State sub-forum you were looking for a good tech to restore the 2500. On this sub-forum at 2:16 you "just had it restored." I guess you found someone . . . and he works fast!

It was already at a guy who seemed shakey last I had talked to him and you guys were suggesting I go elsewhere and at about 2 he called and said he was buttoning it up and had it runnin great haha
picked it up at 10 last night plugged it in all the lights work he fixed the overheating issue and the peak light circuit too made it look brand new too 280 bucks sound about right??
just need some speakers now to actually hear it ...

What was the problem? Give us the details. The 2500 is a complex receiver to service.
You have a classic Marantz. Never sell it.:thmbsp:

according to him there was a diode installed backwards from the factory ???
causing one channel to get very very hot like melt solder joints hot
and causing tons of distortion
its never been opened up since new "it was my dads"
and he said he honestly maybe used it for a summer in the 70s
and said it never sounded very good hahaha I guess this is why??
then just some of the display lights/leds were burnt out and he said it had dirty controls? static noisy volume knob aand tons of crackle and screetching
supposedly its all better now I have no speakers to hear it on...
very new to all this

yea prob far from a full restoration but looks almost brand new seeing as were the only owners ever
ill take pics tonight soon as Im home tonight!!!
can anyone offer some advice on a set of speakers a neighbor on my street has for sale?? they are cerwin vegas VS-150 I believe but 80 bucks for the pair and appear to be perfect he just says his surround sound receiver wont push them?? would this be a good starter pair for me ?

Glad to hear you got the 2500 working as it should. Must have been a late Friday build.:D
How it passed QC is a mystery.:scratch2:

thats what my dad said ????!!!!
but were hopeful that was the issue to be determined this week !
it does look great all lit up though

If you haven't touched the pots on the scope board (P900?) everything should be good. I had a problem on my Marantz 2130 and had to realign the scope to spec. I used my Sound Technology ST 1000A FM Generator exactly as specified in the service manual. That's why I bought the 1000A. The scopes on these units are mostly for show, not repairs. If you know where the Horizontal & Vertical pots are you can follow the display pattern in the owners manual. You'll need an FM generator for signal strength and center channel tuning,

I do not know if capacitors get out of specification from age or use. I'm sure some of the super techs we are fortunate to have on this forum can tell us. If from use, then if the receiver was not used much (due to assumed bad QC) it may be in pretty good shape. If from age, then that is a unit that deserves restoration from one of the super techs we are fortunate (there is that word again, but I genuinely mean it) are available. Do not let just anyone work on it. To do otherwise is rather like having an original Shelby Cobra restored by the mechanic down on the corner. Likely a bad idea.

Caps lose "capacity" with age, it's a fact. I pulled 2 suspect caps out of my Yamaha m70 the other night, both were rated at 1000uf. One measured 550uf and the other 700uf. As these caps age their ability to filter decreases, this is especially important in power supplies where caps are subjected to a lot of heat by high current resistors and transistors.
