I'm not sure how much the contractor knows, but I do know that the last person to live there was handicapped. They had one of those motorized chairs built into the basement staircase.
I might try and swing through tomorrow if the house is still standing and take a more detailed look through the house. I've gotta try and hunt down some speakers!
Is it possible that the house had an OLD person in it, who may not have been fully handicapped, but needed the chairlift? Someone who might have bought these Marantz units new, years ago?
What I find puzzling is that almost everything else was gone from the apartment BUT these. Either someone hung on to them until the last, because they were loved, or someone hung on to everything else and left these, thinking they were too old and worthless. Either way seems a bit weird to me. Not questioning your find at all; just very curious what the "back story" is behind how those things came to be left there, while other stuff wasn't. Seems weird, but it sure was great luck for you!
I'll give you $200 for the set!
I'll give $201! Better yet, if you'll take Hong Kong $, I'll give 1,200 of them!
[Obviously just joking here; to be serious would violate the rules, and we all know that these sums aren't realistic, anyway.]
As a contractor who has demoed many structures this story does not pass my smell test... and has a smell of larceny to it.
It might have been possible that someone else stole these, and stowed them in the "old, vacant" house for a few days, planning to come back for them after they'd lined up a "safe" buyer. BUT the OP said that there were signs that a turntable had been there, too, so I don't think this was the case.
I've pulled some really good stuff from condemned houses, including elaborately-carved antique furniture with marble inlay, a VERY old ceiling fan with hand-cut ruby-colored Belgian crystal bells over some light bulbs that looked like Thomas Edison made them, a pair of tables with 2" thick solid exotic burlwood-slab tops, some highly-collectible 1950s furniture, antique carved-lacquer wall panels and screens, several bags of silver coins(!), hand-embroidered silk wall hangings, and other obviously-expensive things. You'd be surprised what people will abandon when moving, and people move for different reasons, which may influence what they take and what they leave behind.
On the topic of Marantz tube gear, I was looking at a pair of Model 9s earlier this evening, and they looked SO NEW, so perfect, that I'm wondering... either someone's idea of a restoration is essentially a complete rebuild, including new anodizing and lettering, or else, just perhaps, someone (I would presume in China?!) is duplicating these? I've seen a few of arguably the world's best-preserved ones, still with original wrapping and boxes and such, but none that left me believing they were NEW, as much as these. Really has me wondering. Did someone duplicate or re-issue these models? I think next time I'll ask about them. [Note: I'm NOT implying anything abou the ones in this thread; absolutely not (esp. since they were free in a completely different setting). Just wondering about the ones I saw.]
