No nothing in particular I see some Eico, Heathkit, etc. Most of what I have been collecting is EL84 (Fisher 480, Knight 1515, Magnavox 8603 & 196, etc), but I have some Inspire 6FLV and Magnavox 185, amps too.I have an idea of almost everything that was there. Any picture in particular. BTW Patrick brought some killer sounding tube gear
Try a variac at 12v AC input and check your voltages per the schematic. This limits current better than a dim bulb as it skews the readings less.Hi NC audio people. I am in Raleigh and starting on this hobby having built a few project cars and totally rewiring them. That seems easy by comparison as everything is small now and there are different components. I acquired a non-working (but nice) Pioneer SX-850 that I am trying to debug, as it is failing dim bulb.
At this point, I have identified that if I leave only one fuse installed on the power board, the dim bulb fails. It does not fail on any of the others.
If anyone has the time to lend an assist with some common debug tips, that would be great.
I need to pick up a Variac or similar. Any recommendations? I am thinking of maybe getting a DC power supply. I think it needs to be 50v for this receiver but not positive.Try a variac at 12v AC input and check your voltages per the schematic. I appreciate that offer. I can send pics or whatever if that helps. I feel like I have a decent "base" understanding of what is going on but just lack the experience of the how to interpret what I measure.I'd be willing to look at it sometime!
Variac is on order...."waiting on parts"...I say the same thing when I work on cars. You need an AC variac not a dc power supply.
Be ready to order parts maybe 5 or 6 times lol. I always think I got them all and forget one or two. The shipping is what gets ya from digikey. Did you also get Pomona or similar test lead extenders so you dot shock yourself or just put electrical tape to limit the test lead length.Variac is on order...."waiting on parts"...I say the same thing when I work on cars.
I do have test leads and a few more I built that have the little "grabber" ends too. I also picked up a better DMM; a fluke 117. I learned a long time ago, tools can make a big difference. Gotta love wasting $ on shipping for the tiniest of parts. Kinda painful.Be ready to order parts maybe 5 or 6 times lol. I always think I got them all and forget one or two. You have a variac now build an ammeter to watch the current. Meters are sold on Amazon or eBay. You want AC amps. You don’t want to use a dim bulb. They skew the voltage readings due to the current limiting. You are already limiting the current enough with the variac. STOP using a dim bulb tester.I finally got my variac and set it up as the AC source with the dim bulb in-between it and the received. I need to sort out a good diagnostic procedure as I am learning on the fly. I know that the problem is after two fuses which are the +/- AC input so I can go downstream and start testing parts. I am wondering if I should disconnect the protection board from the power board as I think the issue is on one of these two parts. Comments and advice are much appreciated!
You are not being redundant and I am glad to have this conversation as I go. I did pick up three "vintage" items with the books. I will list the specifics later today but there is a scope, bench DMM and I believe a signal generator. The price was right but I have not had time to do more than a power on test.Nice…any plans for an oscilloscope and signal generator or audio analyzer (distortion analyzer)? 8 ohm Load resistors. Sorry if being redundant and look forward to other new people in Nc joining AK.
