nos Garrard 301 on epray

I will be keeping an eye on the final price, can't say I have ever see one as unused as this.
 
The 301 was my first turntable and I still have it and the manual and the black plinth with the Fairchild tone arm. I guess I shouldn't be but I am shocked to see that the bid does not meet the reserve. So does everybody watch Antique Roadshow?:scratch2:
 
I'm betting on 2500-3000.00 for this thing. I have seen NIB 301s go for 1500+ a couple of years ago before their prices seemingly doubled.
 
Well, I wouldn't call it NIB - no box shown, but lots of extras..... $2000 or so?
A few years back a plain ol' white/oil 301 NIB (box was sealed) sold for just over $1k - this was when the typical selling price was $300 to $500 for a mounted one. I agree, these have doubled or more in the past 3 years along with a lot of other vintage gear. Remember when Marantz 8Bs were $1000 at most? 7Cs for $1200? Only 5 years ago my friends....

The box is shown with the 301 marking on the side.
NIB is a pretty open-ended term it doesn't mean that it will work.
It is crazy how prices continue to climb. With the older high end stuff I think it will just keep going.

Not to nit-pick....but that box looks like it's for the base. A 301 box has a picture of the 301 on the side with the B.I.C. lion logo all over it. Might be a picture of it somewhere on the web. I'd consider that table to be mounted and used and so should any serious buyer - but it does look to be 9.5/10 condition. It will go for $$$.

I don't like the NIB term either - it's almost as overused as mint.
 
Hard to say what the buyer has in mind for the 301 but I'm sure the spindle grease has hardened and the rubber parts as well.

No matter what it will need an overhaul but a nice unit to start with. Would I pay that much?........No!
 
As for the spindle grease being hard, mine is not so chances are his is OK.

I meant the grease in the spindle holder that becomes hard. The tube being sealed would not oxidize as much but these items --the grease and the rubber pieces are now about fifty years old.
 
These tables always need to be rebuilt for top performance but often work in as-found condition. They are easily rebuilt as everthing comes apart with screws (don't loose them!). If you don't have the original grease Phil Woods bicycle bearing grease works well. It's a low speed grease like the Garrard stuff, so it stays sticky and flows well at low temperatures. The only other rubber part is the idler wheel, which can be rejuvinated with Rubber Renue, or replaced with a new replica now sold on eBay. I think part of the appeal of these tables is the fact that with a rebuild today they will work for another 50 years. Your great grand children will use a table like this.

This looks like to me it really IS new in box -- note in description that the hardware parts are still in sealed packages, and that the AC voltage warning sticker is still attached.
It's up to three grand . . .

I'd love to hear my old vinyl sound good again, but I ain't going nowhere near that kinda coin.
 
Somebody wants that puppy bad. I was sure the reserve would be $3K, but apparently its even higher than that! Possibly $3500 or even $4K.

When did ebay change to hiding the identity of bidders? What's with the bidder1, bidder2 thing?

I think at this point the buyer is getting this for collection purposes beyond the fidelity of the devise. To keep the value one would have to leave the packages sealed. I would rather have a nice clean example pay a lot less for it and enjoy it. For what it is worth I think the Thorens TD-124 of the same era is a better designed table.

Very good.

The house that I live in now was built in 1924. We bought it as an estate which meant the basement garage and attic were still full of stuff. The best finds were a bottle of 59 Dom, a shortwave radio which I was able to sell on the bay for $500 and a fly fishing rod. The rest was labor to the dump.

That's 480,000 yen!

You can buy one from a dealer in Japan for less than this. 350,000 yen (about $3kUS) gets you a grey/grease 301 with a vintage 12 inch arm. :scratch2:

An unmounted plain white/oil 301 is about 130,000yen, $1100US.
