So, you're Machinegunbill in Pittsburgh, PA. I really don't think you run the risk of having someone find you, loot your home, and steal your gear just because you included your City and State in your profile.

By not including your city and state in your profile, you are greatly limiting how members here can help you. Here's an example.

Post 1 - Looking for a nice TT. Help.
Post 2 - Where are you located?

Here's another:

Post 1 - Where do I find decent used records around here?
Post 2 - Where is "here" ?

It is particularly irksome to see something I would like to buy in BarterTown and have no idea where the seller is located. And some sellers, when asked to provide location information, state that they provided that information in other threads. As if I care enough to remember the location of every anonymous member who wishes to keep his location secret.

I put a general area into my profile. With the majority of people I encounter in the wild, when asked. "If on AK?" Stating, "they just lurk" it seems best.

I always tell folks to at least put a general area in their sig/profile.
Kinda helps to know which coast you are on, or if in the middle -
Or even outside CONUS (CONtinental US for the non MilSpec folks).

But - I'm singing to the choir in here, aren't I?

More important fish to fry in life than where someone lives!! If they ask for help locating a service but do not provide the location then don't reply. If they are selling something I want I will ask where they are, if they want to sell it they will answer if not no skin off my @$$. Of course the only time you can get them to divulge their location is if they forgot to put on their foil hat.

My stated Location is precise and accurate...

:eek2:

...you just have to be facing the right direction. :D

In anything I've posted where the location of my domicile genuinely mattered, I've explicitly included it in my post -- like in discussions about line voltage or line frequency or products that are locally available. Outside of something like that -- which comes up pretty rarely -- why would my location matter?

Whats your hat size?

"My stated Location is precise and accurate..."
Until I turn around, of course.

One forum I'm on is vigilant... adamant... even militant about location information, for the very reasons stated above. Plus ones of market/business discussions, labor and material availability and costs, etc. It works, and is worthwhile. Moderators jump in and give warnings to update, under penalty of removing threads/posts of continued offenders. It's a high-traffic site too, so that's lots of work which I'm not ready to recommend here. But location is good.
