Not Including your City, State in your Profile . . .

Your sex is for us, so we can say him or her instead of they or it.

Age is nice for us to know where you might be coming from, like life experience.

Location is nice for us to help you with recommendations and just general help.

Signature posting your equipment that's in your system/systems is nice for us to help you. And if your helping we know were your reference point is.

You could just use 'OP', or a user's name.

My declared age is roughly correct, but I don't use my DoB anywhere except for official purposes; too easy for data mining ID thieves to cross-reference.

If I wanted specific assistance, I'd give the necessary information in the thread, so people wouldn't have to trawl my profile.

I have sigs turned off, even when viewing on my computer. I assume that relevant information will be posted in-thread. I'm not interested in sigs, which is why I don't have one.

I have a symmetric attitude, not one about hiding anything. If you want to tell us all about yourself, that's fine. I'm not interested in that stuff. I am only interesdted in what you have to say.

All reasonable, but not everyone is as reasonable as you. Unfortunately...
  • Gender gets used by some lonely, confused males to decide which participants to drool over, chase, discriminate against, or treat better or badly.
  • Age becomes a means for old folks to ignore young folks, and vice versa.
  • Location becomes a means to discriminate, isolate, or deprecate.
  • Lists of equipment become badges to brag about, snob over, sneer at, or turn into criteria for inclusion or exclusion.
Etc.

I actually like to know age, it helps me know which post are just grumpy old men bitching about change or young people trying to learn something. Plus the grumpy old men just bitching about technologically can be very entertaining!!

:beerchug:

Without knowing I felt sure DaveVoorhis was from the Netherlands or Belgium perhaps, 'not knowing' causes people (maybe just me :)) to jump to conclusions?

I am a glass half full guy so IMO that is not the intent of most who have sigs. I am mostly wrong about most things so probably this also.

My name is right here

But it's not on your profile.

My location and the kit I own are also posted on threads here.

I have tens of thousands of forum posts elswhere, too, but I don't expect you to have read them all, or remember the hundreds of thousands of users I have interacted with. There are too many people on forums to remember who they all are, so my general approach is to respond to each thread as if it was the first time I've ever encountered someone. That has good sides and bad sides, but, on balance, it works for me.

I find it hilarious that some posters seem so indignant over not having other posters' info. IF a poster is asking for help or selling something then location is helpful. If not, who cares? What I chose to share is my business. If you want to share your name and address, knock yourself out, but the judging people over it is just as shitty as any other kind of random judgement shown on here lately.

I think you are correct for the most part actually. But as with real life, some prefer to be judged on what they own rather than who they are. When I was 17 and was working at the back dock at Sears I called for help one Saturday (my second day on the job) and this older guy with a badge just like mine that said "Don" on it came down and helped me load customer cars. When we got done, he said he had to run but it was nice to meet me. When I got off that night I saw him get into an average 70s Buick Regal (this was in 1984) and drive away. The next day I found out he was the store manager, who even back then was making a six figure income. His badge did not say "Store Manager" nor did he drive a fancy car, nor did he wear fancy suits every day. Now his wife drove a Lincoln and he had a really nice house but he did not need to advertise what he owned........and I always admired that.

I just prefer to learn about someone without knowing then specifics of what they own. I list the brands of what I have as I do believe a common frame of reference can be helpful.........but showing the brands of one's cables? Not so much.

A person who eats a certain citrus fruit in order to avoid scurvy?
Close. I have legal residency in the UK (the official term is "indefinite leave to remain") but am a US citizen by birth and a Canadian by naturalisation.

So where I am doesn't identify who I am. It only -- for audio purposes -- identifies the voltage and frequency of the AC supply from my wall sockets and what stores and cities are near by.
