Because to me (the most important ears in this equation are mine) they sound a bit better with the grills on. Have you done some extended listening both ways?

I put some cloth grills in front of them for a few listens just to see if Iwas missing anything by not having them. It didn't take very long before I put them away again. These ears like them fine just the way they are. I also played a bit with the attenuators and it didn't take long before I set them back to "0".

stacked NS

Hey B-2, once you get them stacked , let us know how they compare to one set. I had 4 of them for a while and have since gone back to 1 pair(space constraints). mine were spread out a bit and did offer more volume and "more" bass but IMHO not better sound. If it's rock you're playing stacked may be the way to go but maybe not for acoustic/classical.

Brian (brainsmasher) picked these up for me in Sheridan, WY this morning. Seller called to let me know that they went out in 'near mint' condition and I feel sure that Brian will keep them that way. He has a pair of Pioneer (?) speakers that he wants to compare them to. I'll probably simply swap out the mid-range driver with one from my NS-1000M so can fix the cage. Seller is such a stand-up guy that he sent back my shipping charges. Great deal all around.

If our kindly moderator will move this to the Speakers Forum I'll keep folks posted on the next steps, including any mods that take place. I'll certainly rewire and put in new terminals. Will also probably make the changes necessary to use an active crossover and bi-amp.

Don't know, as of yet. Hope to find the design for the original and see is needed. But, won't know until I actually have them in my possession, which will be after our mid-July move. Shouldn't be too difficult to come up with something decent.

I agree about the looks. I h..ed the silver badges so much that I carefully removed them. Who needs to look at that all the time? I won't forget what they are. They sound so good though, it makes up for their sort of bad looks.

Axel - I bought a pair of used socks (see avaitar) a couple of weeks ago and I have to say at first I was suspicious but now I find myself agreeing with Glenn; for home use the socks might be just what you want.

In a studio I can see how the M's without socks would be great with all that damping going on and all but at home with naked walls and almost bare floors, the socks work quite well sonically.

My wife loved these speakers from the day she first listened to them but now with the socks on she saying they sound so sweet and look so much better I should be leaving them beauties right where they are!

Just picked these up from brainsmasher (Brian - can't thank you enough :thmbsp: ) in Colorado yesterday and am now running from my brother's CR-2040. Can't really say much, as they are sitting on the floor.....but are definitely related to the NS-1000M in their sound. The 1 or 2 inches difference in dimensions doesn't seem like much. But, they are significantly larger and weight 23 pounds, each, more. First thing I'll have to do is get some idea of what the original grill design was. Shouldn't be too difficult to come up with something reasonable and decent looking for not much effort/$$. More later.
