NS-1000M speakers - not working correctly upon arrival

Hello, I bought a pair of NS1000M speakers. I discovered one speaker's woofer is damaged and the other speaker only has sound from the midrange speaker. I received over half my money back and plan to repair the speakers. Any ideas on why sound on only the mid range speaker. I can deal with the one bad woofer.

Also are these speakers compatible with a subwoofer or is it a moot point.

Curious if they were advertised as working and arrived this way? I owned a pair and sold them...the only speaker I sold that I truly regret selling. I placed mine right up against the wall and didn't feel the need for a subwoofer. Powered with a 6550 60watt tube amp.
 
Yes they were, have after market tweeters, not original, I thought for the price that was fine......I just finished looking at the speakers, both woofers need to be replaced and the cabinets were cut for the tweeters (going back to originals not likely)......One woofer buzzes badly the other is frozen solid. I either keep them for 300 plus 100 ship paid (and pay to repair) or I send them back for all my money.....I'm sending them back. very disappointing.

I have a M-70 and I might just get a set of NS-500M's

Both the M-70 and NS-500s are nice.
Go to the Yamaha Forum and see what's been posted about the M-70.
 
Really check for magnet shifting, I had a couple speakers with the same issues, both had magnet shifts. Was able to repair them myself, still using them today.
 
If your woofer cone is froze solid, it's more then likely you have a shifted magnet. Take a nice picture of the magnet for us.
 
I can't speakers are packed up. I looked at the speaker magnet side and I did not see anything out of place. some corrosion on the circular portion on the outside. I know nothing about speakers so I did not try to "open" anything.

How much to get that fixed, I do not have time to do it myself.
 
Dont bother unpacking. Send them back and look for another pair. Without getting really upside down value wise, These will never be worth what an undamaged pair are - neither in monetary nor sound quality.
 
I think I will look for a set of the NS-500m If I see another pair of 1000m's I'll think about it. This had been a disappointment for both me and the seller.
 
Look out for a local pair if possible. There are always risks to shipping, esp such heavy speakers, and the shipping costs are non-trivial.
 
Well this is the end result of a shipping nightmare (thanks to POS UPS) I now have a pair of NS1000m's that I have now paid 100.00 for, that need subwoofer repairs. Not sure beyond that. I guess I won't know what kind of deal this is till the repair dust settles. Crazy how this deal went.

Yup the seller did not want to pay for the damaged speakers to be shipped back (200.00 each way). He is out 100.00 and the speakers. I'm out 100.00 and have the speakers. Still shaking my head over this one.

Lesson learned (Do Not Ship Expensive Speakers - buyer or seller)
 
Part them out for the working mid, working tweeter, crossovers, L-Pads etc, and sell the bass drivers as-is to a repairer/restorer.

You'll come out miles in front.

Then take the cabinets to the dump as the ruined tweeter holes make them pretty much worthless.

I was going to say, consider making an adapter plate of some sort so the correct tweeter will fit and still look OK, and save a pair of speakers from being lost for all time. But you said you don't have time to do that kind of work, so I won't suggest it. :p

Whoever put in the new tweeters made sure they were a tight fit and well done. I haven't decided yet what I'm going to do with those NS-1000m's...I am going to re foam the NS-690 II's so I can enjoy some music.

I would think the Ns-1000M's would still be a very nice sounding speakers if all I did was fix the two woofers. The tweeters are SELENEUM
