NYT article on saving a.m. radio

As much as I dislike what HD Radio is doing to FM, when my AM tuner locks into HD the improvement is startling. If I listened to AM, I would want an HD tuner. Of course the one AM station my wife likes doesn't broadcast HD. This is an observation at home; I don't know how well HD AM radio performs in cars.

It does not very well. And it trashes adjacent stations. And limits analog frequency response. HD AM should never have been legalized.

My Dad used to work on the weekends in Thermopolis, Wyoming at the local radio station KTHE he ran the board broadcasting the local high school sporting events. about 15 years ago I learned they where updating their transmitter. I missed getting the Collins 20V transmitter my Dad operated by just a couple of weeks it was scraped. The 20V transmitters with some mod's make really nifty AM transmitters on the lower ham bands. That would have been really interesting operating the same transmitter my Dad used to back in the early 1960's.

Ha! By publishing this 'objective' report, The New York Times is trying to distract us from their shutting down of WQXR-AM in 1993. Never forget! Never forgive!

as an aside -- not entirely irrelevant, but mostly :-) -- I have lately been listening at night to a Canadian clear channel station, CKDO, from Oshawa, Ont. They play a very broad array 60s-70s top forty hits... pretty darned pleasant listening for AM radio in the early 21st Century!

1580 on your AM dial :-)

AM is still alive and well in Chicago, I occasionally (when the atmosphere allows me) tune into an oldies station from Toronto as well on AM.

I can listen to Chicago, Boston, Detroit, Charlotte, Nashville, Cincinnati ( and Philadelphia) all on this 3 dollar cheapo transistor I use at night. Of all the portable radios I own, almost every station requires the stupid antenna to be pulled out somewhat in order to listen. Annoying as hell, which is why I prefer am. I don't need stereo to listen to discussions.
