Off topic...are LED lights safe for the eyes?

Actually it's the opposite. CCDs are much more sensitive to infrared light than the human eye, which is at the opposite end of the visible spectrum from UV. In fact, that's how "night vision" cameras work -- by detecting infrared light that we can't see.

If the colors are coming out wrong in your photos, then you simply need to adjust your camera's white balance. On some the automatic white balance simply doesn't work that well, and it's better to use manual white balance -- hold a white piece of paper in front of the lens and then engage manual white balance, and it will adjust itself to whatever your lighting is.
ccds react to light above and below the visible spectrum. In my example, the LEDs are 4-7Kmcd which contain almost no IR spectrum except what they emit due to current consumption, however....they overload the blue/violet range and the camera software tints them blue. while it may be true that I can adjust the gizmos, I know almost nothing about my camera or photography in general so I ignore it.

this same UV component is why the ps in my post mentioned the grey colors. very few paints or tints actually make gray from black/white. they use a lot of red/blue combos which works...but the led/cfl effect is unexpected.

Hate blue LEDs, or blue displays of any kind. Most of the time they're too bright and distracting. When I was a kid I had a SONY clock radio that used a blue VFD that, even on the dim setting, was so bright it illuminated my bedroom to the point of disturbing sleep. I used to throw clothes over it to stop the light. Once I rented a Hyundai Sonata that had blue backlit gauges and LCD panel. In order to see the markings, you had to have the intensity at max and it impaired night vision. Bad design.

I have an audio buddy who insists that blue LEDs improve the sound of his gear, so he always changes any LED to blue. Sigh.
 
On a few of the car Forums, I see some of the young guys installing LEDs inside their cars "because it looks cool". I try to explain to them that these "cool" lights will play havoc with your night vision, similar to having a flash bulb go off in your face....this is the very reason why many high-performance vehicles choose reddish-orange lights for their dashboards.
 
Not adverse to using LEDs to replace troublesome and hard to find incandescents on the classic receivers though. Big thing for me is playing with the color temp and hue to get them as close to the original glow. Last project, used 12v warm white automotive types driven at 7vdc using the stock 7vac lighting circuit via a rectifier ... worked slick!

I hate the wave of public LED lighting that is only going to get worse. The glare off them is something else. It seems like every time we go out there are a few more businesses blasting unshielded floodlights onto the road and their neighbors. I've got a guy on our street who illuminates about a acre with his. Progress?

Though I didn't do the dash I put led in the dome lights and boy what a difference.The house and garage are 100 percent led.

Just what is this fascination with using blue LEDs in everything? When one of us is under the weather here, I will try to sleep in the family room. But the computer's blue LED bar blinks when it is in sleep mode. So does the monitor's LED, at a different blink rate. The printer's blue LED lights up the ceiling. The blue LEDs on my HDMI switcher I have to cover up since they are all illuminated, all the time, for whatever reason.

Even my phono stage (Phonomena+) uses a blue LED. At least my Conrad-Johnson preamp uses a red LED when the preamp is on standby, and orange LEDs for the source selection and volume readout.

What was ever wrong with red LEDs anyway? Nothing. They could be made bright enough to see in a well lit room, yet didn't have their own room-lighting glow when the lights were off. Green was also acceptable. But blue? Blue LEDs need to go away, like, forever.

The bad thing about red dashboard lighting is that with my vision, I can't read it at all, at night. My better half's some has some crap can Pontiac that is several years old and I had to move it out of the driveway--the entire gauge cluster was a huge, unreadable mass of glowing red. Yet in my other cars, including those that are backlit with white LEDs, I can read the gauges fairly clearly without glasses. They are not overpoweringly bright either, so that is a plus. (And I am also glad they are not those white-face gauges.)

I put up LED security lights outside, but they are motion detectors, so they are not glowing all the time. ;) But here is something I find odd in terms of public LED lighting. The street lights in our city are pretty much all converted to LEDs now, and I find that they do not give off the same light as what they replaced. Some were the orange "sodium" lights, where others were the bluish mercury vapor (?) lights. The LEDs are more directional, and slightly less bright. The one plus is that the street light at the end of our driveway is no longer blaring in our windows all night long.

One interesting thing I learned about Flagstaff, Arizona when we visited the Lowell Observatory is that Flagstaff is a Dark Sky City. I will admit that in some places it was harder to see where I was driving, but it was also very nice to see a nearly pitch black sky at night.

I've replaced my dome and map lights with LEDs but would prefer them a bit brighter--I may go for a brighter Philips LED when I get a chance. (A good side benefit is that if you leave an LED bulb on overnight, it won't drain the battery like incandescents will. ;) )

However, I am going to be replacing our brake lights with LEDs. The "instant on" feature of LEDs grabs attention better than incandescents that begin glowing gradually, and are a bit brighter. The Philips Ultinon bulbs are now available through Tire Rack at a good price, so I may order some for both cars from there.
 
Blue is the absolute WORST color to use in terms of visual acuity....it scatters the light, giving very sucky contrast....
(This is why Skylight filters have always been so popular in photography)
